I just wanted to take a moment and leave this review thanking Dr. Mandel and his staff, especially Jessica I believe her name was, who helped talk me through the unfortunate experience of having to have my hedgehog euthanized today. (She actually used to breed hedgehogs for 8 years and so it was nice having someone who can relate to how hard it is to let these prickly little animals go.) I haven't had the opportunity to be a frequent customer here, but I will be now. When my hedgehog first required emergency attention a few months ago, the staff there were quick to fit an appointment in which was huge. Dr. Mandel has a caring demeanor that's difficult to find these days and he really takes the time to explain symptoms and what to expect. So that made a huge impression on me and that coupled with his knowledge for pretty much any animal is why I'll be returning with whatever pet I find in the future.

We choose this vet when we moved to VA a year ago. From the beginning I have not been satisfied. The front receptionist is incapable of staying on task, she finds it necessary to stop checking you in/out to converse with anyone who happens to get near her. It took almost 20 minutes at one visit just to check out! The office is also incapable of scheduling appointments at reasonable intervals. While I understand emergencies happen that can delay appointments, every single time I’ve been has resulted in an hour to two hour wait. But, the biggest complaint and the absolute last straw is THEY NEVER GAVE MY DOG A RABIES SHOT!!!! He is 8 months old and my new vet sees nothing in his records showing the vaccine and when I requested a copy from Stephen City be faxed to me, I was sent proof of distemper not rabies. Absolutely unacceptable and I would never recommend this office to anyone. I could go on about the vet yelling at staff, being told to wait outside when my dog was being euthanized (I did not leave my boy)and several another unprofessional acts from this office. Edit in response to the vets response: First Lyme follow up was cancelled due to a local snow storm, I left a message at the office to reschedule and was not called back. Started the shots over again, second time was cancelled due to a medical emergency and reschedule but by that time we had already decided to change vets. As for the associate vet moving to FL, we’ve been here almost two years and the back log at the office has been the same since the beginning and does not justify the unbelievable wait times and disorganization of the office. I stand by my review.

Love this place! Great, Great Vet and staff! Very caring!!!! Have taken all my pets to them for 10 plus years. And my Father took his dogs to them their whole lives before my dads passing. Dr. Mandel is honest, kind, and genuine! He loves his patients and their crazy over protective mommas too. Thank you so much Dr. Mandel.

We have been using Dr. Mandel for years and have always been very pleased. We have multiple animals at any given time and he has provided quality care. The staff has always been pleasant to work with. When calling for an appointment today we were rudely told they were booked and then hung up on. I can only assume this is a staffing problem and not the directive of Dr. Mandel, but the end result is the same. We have to find a new vet for our animals. I see from recent reviews that we are not the only ones to have this experience. UPDATE: Happy to say staffing changes were made and we are very happy to be using Stephens City Animal Hospital again. Still the best Docs around.

I wanted to say how much I truly appreciate Dr. Mandel and his team at Stephens City Animal Hospital. I called them (in tears) after one of my chickens got attacked by a hawk and needed to be seen. Dr. Mandel was gracious and kind enough to see me the same day without an appointment. He listened to me and put me right at ease as I cried and explained what happened. I’m happy to say my little chicken is on the mend and I couldn’t be happier! His staff was kind, understanding and showed a true love for their patients! Thank you so very much!

I have had nothing but amazing service. Dr. Mandel is extremely knowledgeable and he & his staff have always been exceptionally nice and caring at every visit. I never worry that my pets are in good hands. They have always fit me in when my pets were in need of being seen, and I feel that they have always gone out of their way to make sure my pets were taken care of. I am forever grateful for the work that they do.

Been going here for 12 years. I love Dr. Max and his staff. They have taken excellent care of all my critters. I have been to several others over the years and he is the best by far.

Dr.mandel and his excellent staff helped my poor nala and I went to another vet for them to misdiagnose my poor kitty but they got me and her in and help get us on the right path to recovery I love yall and you will deffinately be seeing me and my kitties again thank you so again you guys set the bar up and beyond and the other vets should take notes on yall cause they need them

The office needs to work on scheduling. I have been a customer for three years and each time we go in, the wait to see the doctor is an hour or more. It is unfortunate because Dr. Max is a very nice and knowledgeable vet. I will not be back.

I found a kitten that was about 8-10 days old (again) and The veterinarian was WONDERFUL around me and my kitten. He saw us right away because he was sick. The staff that was there this past week were so kind and understanding to my situation. I had to again bring the kitten in last minute on Saturday and they squeezed us in! We have been going there for about 10 years and love them!! T.Wilson

It was a little wait to be seen, but it was worth the wait. Dr. Mandel was super, he took the time to examine my new puppy, and spent time talking to me. In my opinion I’ll continue to take my puppy to Dr. Mandel.

For those of you with backyard / pet chickens, this is the place for you!! As those with birds know, when they show signs of illness, the clock is ticking, & Dr. Mandell saw us the same day. Staff was friendly, helpful, & courteous. It was genuine concern and "knowledge" that was most impressive!! Fee was reasonable & service exceptional!

Such an amazing place. We had an emergency with our bull mastiff. Did not have any wait time they took him right in. Wonderful staff. I can't say enough about Dr.Max. A true life saver. What a blessing. Thank you all for everything you did to help my big boy Kota

Smart, wise and punny (as in puns and funny) Vet. Knows what he is doing and he loves animals. What more could you ask for?

Me and my mom has always took our pets to Dr Mandell and thought they were great until I started having issue with my boxer having seizers. After we got him loaded in the car as he was still seizing and drove to Stephens City Animal Hospital and grant this was an emergency when I arrived I ran in and explained to them that my dog was seizing in the car and need help. Well I was told to wait that there was other people ahead of me that was scheduled for appt. So I asked how long my dog had to suffer in the car before bringing him in and they told me they would get to me as soon as possible so I told them I would be waiting in the car with my baby they said ok we will be out soon to get him An 1.5 hours later of my poor baby laying there seizing and flopping around with his eyes rolled back in his head they finally come out to get him. They acted as they were surprised to see him that way after I cried and begged them to help my dog. He had to be put down right away because he was pretty much brain dead. I couldn't believe after going there all these years that I was treated in that manner and to think that they have the best interest in the animals that they see on a regular basis. It was a very sad situation and on the way out you better believe they were asking for there payment..... SMH lesson learned the hard way. I found my fur babies a new doctor and they are amazing Newtown Clinic. The doctors are great and so are the receptionist!

Stephens City Animal Hospital is a loving, caring and knowledge facility. I have no doubt that my cat is receiving the best car possible. I've been using them for over three years and would recommend them to everyone! Sincerely, Tonya Campbell & Kona

Amazing staff and veterinarians! They knew from my description over the phone that something was seriously wrong with my guinea pig. They stayed late to help me. They had a very hard and emotional day and I am so very grateful that they took the time and care to help me. I’m so glad I found them and that they have Vets who treat small and exotic animals. Hoping my guinea pig pulls through!

Not returning here. My first and only visit- the girl at the desk was very rude and unwelcoming, I am pretty sure she is the office manager. The other staff members and Dr. Mandel was very professional and friendly. I will be going back to my normal vet where atleast I am greeted from a friendly person with a smile.

The fact that this place is old and cramped shows their dedication to the animals and not the general public. No frills but you get quality care. They are wonderful with cats.

I'm only giving a 1 star because there isn't an option for a 0. The ladies up front are so unprofessional & RUDE. It's ashame because Mr. Mandel himself seems like a nice & knowledgeable man but because of his unprofessional staff, they have lost us as client's.

I usually have no problems with this vet office but today my mother brought her kitten in to get spayed. When she brought her cat home she noticed that her cat had been sitting in her cage covered in her on piss. God only knows how long this poor cat was in her cage.

Called to get an appointment for my dog. He has some weird skin thing going on. They told me they had no appointment for 6 weeks. I asked if there was another vet in the area. The lady on the phone told me to google it. Very poor customer service.

had an emergency and they got me an appointment asap and didn't charge me an arm and leg...they did everything they could to save my cockatiel but the vet was very nice and said everything in a way I could understand and comfort me when I had to make the hardest choice in my life...thank you so much guys! Did I mention they got me in earlier than my appointment!

Dr.Mandel takes his time to explain explain what's going on ..You can see that both him and staff love taking care of our pets. The ladies in front office are wonderful.

Dr. Mandel, and the ENTIRE staff at Stephens City Animal Hospital are Godsends! If not for them my furry four legged children wouldn't be alive! Thanks to them my oldest "son" survived parvo, cancer twice, HGE (hemorrhagic gastroenteritis), and horner's syndrome. And my baby girl is surviving congestive heart failure. I can't say enough wonderful things about them.

We've taken our animals here for years now, from Hamsters to dogs and a cat. They've always been very friendly and all our animals have been comfortable with them, very flexible in schedule and doesn't charge me an arm and a leg for care. The staff are easy to talk to and seem to really care about the animals that come in. Not hard to understand at all either, I like to know what is up with my pet rather than someone beating around the bush. I couldn't recommend a better vet between front royal and Stephens City, it's well worth the trip to care for the animals!
