I can’t recommend enough. I have an 8 year old hairless kitty that needed care. The team at this location is so kind and patient. I left with full confidence in the knowledge they provided. My tech today was Sarah B. She is absolutely amazing and treated my little guy with so much love and compassion. Thank you all. ♥️

Dr. Abbott is extraordinary. She is everything a vet should be. She has a calm, kind demeanor which is invaluable in emergent situations. The vet techs & front desk workers are also very patient & kind & efficient.

Dr. Abbott is amazing. Although she had a really busy schedule she was able to work in all of the items and deadlines needed for international health certificates for our two cats. She was efficient, responsive, professional and completed everything accurately and on time. The cats successfully cleared international customs and we had no issues with the paperwork. Although some vets advertise they can do international health certificates, they may not be USDA registered, be familiar with the APHIS forms, and they may not have access to the USDA web portal to upload documents (our experience). So if you need international health certificates for your pets come see Dr. Abbott!

When my vet at Hollywood Pet Hospital retired and the practice moved to VCA, I was very lucky to get Dr. Beckley as the vet for my elderly cat. Throughout all his issues she has been amazing and always communicates the recommended path with such clarity and compassion. I feel like my cat’s care is in excellent hands. I’ve referred a friend whose dog also sees Dr: Beckley and my friend is also in total agreement that she is great. Plus very nice to hear on the phone the friendly, always helpful voice of Cindy from Hollywood vet (everyone else is also very helpful on the phone as well). I highly recommend this place for quality care for your pets.

This is by far the best vets I’ve ever been to after almost 20 years of owning dogs. The owners are so compassionate and helped save my dog from the brink of death. They were honest with the prognosis and kept my expectations reasonable throughout the process. Everyone there was so supportive and she ended up making a full recovery! They are always my first recommendation for a vet in Portland and my two dogs love the staff!

My 13 year old dog is currently dying of cancer and took him here because he’s been seen here a couple times but they were the ones who gave me the cancer diagnosis. Their prices are an absolute nightmare, DO NOT let them fill drugs at their pharmacy, just got the bill 3 medications 116$ where at rite aid or cvs it’s about 30$. They make it so you can’t afford to keep your pet alive. Between them diagnosing him with cancer 4 days ago and now I’ve been charged almost 900$. Whoever the male is at reception needs to be let go also, I’ve already made 1 complaint about him after he shooed me away from the front door but now when you call he’s just disrespectful especially to parents grieving about their pets.

If you have a pet you love don’t bother calling them. You literally can’t get an appointment for WEEKS. You have to go to an emergency vet if you need your pet seen within a reasonable time frame - people I’m talking like a few days. My cat had an abscess - well that pretty important wouldn’t you say? I was on hold for 10 MINUTES before the unfriendly receptionist could tell me they were booked for the next two weeks. My cat will be DEAD by then. Seriously?!?! Just hire more people or get longer hours. And don’t give me this Covid excuse: this has happened before - before March. Terrible.

We have taking our pup to this place since we adopted. Everyone is friendly. Our pup agrees with us as well.

VCA Laurelhurst is amazing. They helped us through all the details of a complicated international move with my cat, squeezing us in on a moments notice when the rules for importation changed. Dr. Abbott and the whole crew were so warm and friendly. They were always timely and professional. I recommend this clinic above others in town.

This vet is definitely too busy. They are consistently booked at least 3 weeks out, but sometimes will see you same day for $30 more for a hospital charge. Ok, I get the convenience fee, but I wonder about the quality of care. These people are rushed, you can hear it in their voices, their manner. It’s difficult to care about pet owners when your schedule is packed tighter and tighter though I absolutely believe they care about animals. It seems to have become worse Over the last year or so. It’s been harder to get an appointment in a reasonable timeframe. This is speculation on what I’ve experienced, but these people seem stressed. The last time I called them, after being on hold for quite some time, it seemed like they wanted to get me off the phone. They are mostly polite and professional but I’ll be moving on to somewhere with my senior cats who sometimes need care within a few days, not several weeks. There has to be something between a routine checkup and an Dove Lewis ER visit.

TL;dr -- Care more about up-selling than caring for your pet. We've used them for a few years, we really liked them the first year or two. But the last 2 visits have been down hill--each appointment is usually a hard sell on their in-house care plan. I am just really disappointed from this last visit cause they remembered to add in marketing pieces for Rxs, a prepaid container for HW test (forgot to give us the test container) and forgot to give us after visit notes. Which really just rubbed me the wrong way cause our dog turned 6 and we were concerned about joint health and the vet said she would follow up on that in a note. But the conversation went straight to upsells and $233 later... no notes on joint health suggestions.

Extremely poor customer service. They don't care if your pet is running out of their medication, they don't care to communicate. I have never felt so blown off by a business I was giving so much money to.

The staff was amazing, helpful, and kind. I didn't feel like they were trying to just get money out of me, they truly seem to care about their clients and want to help. The dogtor (Dr. Kim Krug) was super helpful and took time to speak with me and answer all my questions, and even called me back when she thought of other ways to help my epileptic/noise sensitive dog. I highly suggest this place, I am so glad they are in my neighborhood. Thank you to the staff for taking care of my beast and for being so thorough with his care and covid safe procedures!

i showed up here in tears with my hyperventilating pup - too terrified to have remembered that all places require an appointment due to covid -- not to mention i am brand new to portland and had yet to establish a vet here. i was met with nothing but kindness, compassion and informed care. dr. bartell, in particular, has been incredible - not only is her knowledge and experience apparent, she is a careful listener and her ongoing communication was exceptional. thank you, dr bartell! while i waited outside, visibly out of sorts, miguel at the front desk came out and offered me water?! thank you, vca laurelhurst. i will never forget your kindness. alfie is now your patient for life - whether you liked it or not!

I (and my present and past animal companions) have been clients of Laurelhurst Animal Hospital for close to 20 years. We've generally had good care, which is why we've stayed. Over time, I have found the office protocols and systems to feel more corporate than personal, and have also felt a pressure to "plus-up" the treatments and caregiving. Still, my choice to stay. This morning I called early about a problem my current dog is experiencing and was told I'd get a call back from a tech. Six hours later I called back to ask when I might expect a return call, and received an unsatisfactory response. I immediately called another vet clinic closer to my home that has received glowing commentary on our neighborhood FB group and Next Door (I've stayed with Laurelhurst over several moves), had a great conversation with the tech who answered the phone, and have an appointment tomorrow. Suffice to say, I'm moving on. Farewell, Laurelhurst, you seem sufficiently busy and won't miss us.

Long time customer 12 years, before VCA. Had emergency, couldn't get seen, sent list other hospitals. Then needed refill med for past problem, couldn't be seen for six weeks, wouldn't do refill, but willing to upcharge emergency visit. Poor customer service, nickeled and dimed, lack of compassion. If you care about your animals and pocketbook, go elsewhere.

Laurelhurst VCA is not our Primary get. They came highly recommended by mutilple pet-owning friends. We needed to take in our dog for a recurring urinary issue that wasn't resolved by our primary vet from previous 2 visits. The staff are very nice to both humans and animals. They had to deliver unpleasant news to us (surgery required...$$) and I appreciated how honest they were with the estimate.

I normally don't write reviews or trust what other people think i like to make my own opinion but this time I can't just let it go. If you have a PITBULL i highly recommend a different vet the staff was super friendly and making an appointment was quick and easy but we brought our 8 year old pittie in who nevers been human aggressive never worn a muzzle but they wouldn't check him at all unless they got a muzzle on him so called protocol. My Dog is a sweet heart and the staff there made him more nervous then he's every been guessing he could sense how unwanted he was. Then for doing nothing for us and just giving pain meds no vitals even taken even though he needed so much more care they didn't care spent almost $200 dollars for absolutely no care for my baby just some pills for pain. Hate they could see him suffering and that didnt encourage them to try with outa muzzle... they didnt care that we said he doesn't need one and would never bite even out of pain... they may be a great vet but horrible if you have a pittie. Took him to our normal vet they were so great before looking at his mouth the nurse asked if he'd let them which the answer is yes our baby will never be muzzled or need it!

I like this place as a whole and a different vet saved my cats life (Dr. Beckley) which is why I am still giving this review a three. I wasn't able to see Dr. Beckly, so I saw Dr. Bartell (I am specifically reviewing the vet I saw today). I haven't felt so un-heard to by a vet before. I would say something and give context to the situation, which got ignored multiple times and had to keep repeating myself. In the end, I didn't feel heard or like my cat got the best care. Vets should not shame a pet caregiver, because we do our best to figure out what works for our lil ones. At the end of the day, we are the ones that advocate for our pets, so listening to us is really important. It also didn't help that randomly they had my cats age wrong, when it has never been wrong before and were telling me to consider senior testing.

Dr. Chapman is a competent professional and I would have continued to bring my dog here for annual shots and a check-up by a DVM. But straight off it's the marketing shake down. Wherever you go and whoever you call you cannot escape the fake-friendly info inquiry...and they spin it as though they might need to contact me........when? I responded to your auto-persistent email. I settle my bill at the end of my dog's appt. First things first: fleece me for my address straight off? Stop with the 3d degree...all I want is an appt. for my dog. You're not Amazon.

The folks at the VCA Laurelhurst location are top notch. I've brought my dog in quiet a few times due to some emergency issues (lab pup - go figure) and they have always been calm, accommodating, and very detailed in their examinations. I had to wait for some results via a phone call and they called exactly when they said they would which was a huge relief. I switched to the VCA for my primary vet now and I couldn't be happier! Also - they have amazing hours! Very easy to schedule an appointment if you have a 9-5 job.

Miguel was terrible. I’ve been a customer since 2006 and today I’m leaving. He refused to give me flea medication for my pup because her records expired 2 weeks ago! I asked if they could see her now to update and he said no come back at a later date and then we can administer flea meds. Terrible service with an even worse attitude. Sucks that businesses could really care less if you are their client or not. I advise you to see someone else and thank Miguel at the front desk.

A big shout out to Amanda and those who helped me over the phone when I had an emergency with my son's dog that I'm petsitting for the summer. I'm so glad that he takes her to Laurelhurst! The level of caring surprised me and I am most grateful.

I really wanted to like this vet, but after four years of frustrating service and extremely poor communication, I’m looking for something else. My last experience which sent me over the top consisted of the following (but keep in mind this was just my *last* bad experience, not my *only* bad experience): My older dog has extremely bad arthritis. He takes a medication called Rovera to manage it. Occasionally check ups are needed to ensure he is healthy enough to take it. We ran out of Rovera and called VCA Laurelhurst for a refill. And please note — they rarely call you back when you leave a message on their Rx line! After not hearing back from them for two days (two days my dog went without medication), I called back and the person on the phone rudely suggested I leave another message on the Rx line. I said I wasn’t going to do that, and that I needed the medication. She took my information, and guess what — no call back for another two days! I escalated my request to the “pharmacy manager” Sara. And Sara, I hope you are reading this—you have succeeded in causing my dog more pain! I talked to you on Friday morning. You said you would escalate with the vets and get right back to me. It’s now Monday morning — a full three more days have gone by. Thank you for causing my dog to be in pain—you deserve bad things. But it didn’t stop there. Not only have the repeated delays caused my dog hardship, but Dr. Abbott declined to renew the medication! You might think, “well, she is the doctor so she must know best.” However, my dog had a full exam and full blood work done just last month at another VCA vet, and Laurelhurst has the records. All I was asking for was one refill now because I am going out of town, and I’ll bring him in for another exam next time. Request denied! Sara, Dr. Abbott: you should be ashamed for your lack of responsiveness for a dog that’s in pain, and poor decision making as you have all the recent blood work on file. I know I was gruff on the phone, but your collective “win” just hurts my dog and you should be ashamed for that. I’m sure your response will be measured and professional and that you have to palpate this and that before issuing prescriptions. But you know what the real story is. Shame on you.

Not only was the staff was super friendly and knowledgeable, they looked after my cat very gently, and my bill was even cheaper than their original estimate!! No (that's not a joke either). I am new to the area but have found a vet I will be using for all my future pet needs, as well as recommending to everyone.

Staff was sweet, knowledgeable and informative. My kitten was purring for the vets to give him more treats. They definitely try to keep the animals comfortable.

In the response to my review below: the owner offered their deepest sympathies and in the same sentence trolled my objective yet negative review hoping to persuade me to change my rating. I will change my rating - from a 2 to a 1 after receiving their 'deepest sympathies'. Poor form Laurelhurst. Laurelhurst should be called a clinic not a hospital. I took my dog here for 9 years. She was a strong and energetic dog to the end. Unfortunately, she met her end before she needed to. For 9 years she came here and was treated kindly. However, we rarely saw the same vet twice. I don't know if it was due to turnover or a lack of a consistent care plan. She was always healthy so I had no cause to know of any deficiency in the services they provide. However, my most recent experiences have been heartbreaking. We had asked about some concerning tumors at her last check up. The vet tried and failed to biopsy them and then dismissed them as likely benign. Now six months later I made the mistake of attributing a one-time vomit, two skipped meals in a week, and lethargy to a combination of her age and eating something at the park. I was worried about her, but we were leaving for a weekend trip so I was planning to take her into the vet upon our return if she was still lethargic. My mistake. While I was out of state, she skipped dinner on Saturday night for the 3rd time in the week and then tried and failed to stand in the morning after breakfast on Sunday. My parents took her to Laurelhurst at my request. The doctor gave CPR when she arrived because her heart rate and respiration had nearly stopped. After her heart rate and breathing had resumed the doctor determined through a sonogram that she had been bleeding from a tumor on her spleen. The doctor was well meaning but lacked the capability, skills, and/or experience to give me a full picture of her condition and said that any treatment would likely prolong her life only for days or weeks. The only suggestion he made was euthanasia and was gravely pessimistic about any options for successful treatment or recovery. I wasn't there, and it was difficult for me to understand to situation. Ultimately, with the strong suggestion by the doctor, I felt compelled to end her life. Since then I have read of many emergency splenectomy surgeries for dogs with similar conditions. Many of these tales end years later after a strong recovery. I have never regretted anything more in my life than not transferring her to veterinary that could have given her a chance. When I am ready to adopt another dog I will research veterinaries thoroughly and choose a veterinary that has the skills, experience, and capability to provide meaningful options for helping animals recover from illnesses especially in an emergency when emotions and time inhibit research. I will also pay much closer attention to symptoms of lethargy and loss of apatite so a condition does not become emergent. I made several mistakes in assuming her symptoms were less severe than they were and that she would be fine until after our trip. But, I feel Laurelhurst made the mistake of telling me that her condition was worse than it may have been -- that is a mistake she can't recover from. The people at this vet are kind and love animals but when you call yourself a hospital that isn't enough. I miss my girl terribly and I'm so sad I didn't know enough, or take her to a vet that knew enough, to give her a chance to live joyfully for another 5 or more years.

My companion pup was having severe pain due to degeneration in his spine. I freaked out obviously and had never even heard of this place. I'm on sad and had almost 100 bucks to my name. Sunday morning and no one is open or, if they are, completely booked. I called and told them the situation and they went out of their way to get me an appointment as soon as I could get there. They treated my dog before discussing payment and really put my family member's care first. The medicine he needed was almost 100 and the visit totals were almost the same (urgent care). They were able to get me an online coupon so the visit was free and I could afford the meds. I can't say enough how much they helped me and Grrrrr (Yes, my dog has a bad ass name). Thankfully my boy is recovering fine and I feel I have a secure care provider for one of the best friends I've ever had. The service and information was outstanding. Also, they have good coffee in the waiting area lol
