Trust this vet! Good place.

Dr. Bates and his staff are great. We had to make a difficult decision about our family pet and he was great explaining our options. Have used him for years and never shocked about pricing when leaving. He’s upfront and doesn’t bill you and arm and a leg for his services. Highly recommend.

This place stunk like a motel 6 toilet. When you first walk in the place the smell overwhelms you. The front desk assistant behind the desk seemed to be below standards of what a receptionist should be, very cheap personality and nasty over all place. THIS PLACE STIIINNNKS. And just plain nasty. Gross!

Horrible experience. We've been there 3 times because it's the closest to our house. EVERY trip there have been multiple added expenses we didn't ask for. The first time I understood for sure. But why not get everything done the first time? On our THIRD visit there was about $100 of added costs for MORE 'required tests'. EVEN WORSE is the care they gave the dog. The second time we took him it took 15 minutes to pick him up and the reason we were told is that he apparently had pooped and rolled around in it. So... How long was he trapped in a cage with pee in it? I let that go. The third time they didn't even bother to clean the poop off of him! He has NEVER once poop and rolled around at home. We're obviously not going back. STEER CLEAR!

Could not say enough great things about this place! Dr. Bates has this old school knowledge, he takes his time with your pet and with you while explaining in detail everything he’s doing. I wish I had known about them sooner! Amy, the receptionist (but so much more) is genuinely kind, helpful and so patient. I wish I knew the rest of the staff by name because they have all been so incredibly lovely. I recommend this place for the best care!

The doc and staff here are awesome! The doc took his time with our dog and checked him thoroughly. Explained everything in layman's terms. Very clean vet. Small rooms but still nice. Very personable. They truly love your fur babies here.

I love how Dr Bates offices have a small-town feel, the staff know you by name. They've always been super friendly and helpful, and Dr. Bates always makes sure you fully understand what's going on with your furbabies. I drive 30 minutes -passing 6 other vets at least -because the service is worth it!

We have relied upon Dr. Bates and his staff to care for our pets for 14 years. Dr. Bates is caring, and skilled with a wonderful feel for animal behavior that often saves the day. His staff is friendly and professional, and they go out of their way to help and always keep us posted.

Although I appreciate the bedside manner of the staff, it's clear after 2 visits that they are pros at running up a bill with unneeded tests and medication. I brought my cat in for a runny nose and sneezing. The Dr started doing all kinds of test without telling me what he was doing. They tried to charge me $60 for a glaucoma test. I refused to pay it. He gave my cat 2 shots that were $63 a piece. I will not be returning to this vet. I knew my cat had an upper respiratory infection and needed a round of antibiotics. Not $400 worth of senseless test without my permission.

Dr. Bates and staff have provided excellent veterinary services at both the Williamsburg and Gloucester locations for numerous cats I have loved over many years now. I respect and trust he and his staff so much that I drive from Norfolk for the care needed. They have gone out of their way so many times throughout the years to help us in both routine and emergency care, and I really do appreciate it immensely.

Dr. Bates and Staff are very caring. They took great care of our little Sarah when she was feeling poorly and wouldn't eat. He gave us a few ideas and treated her for the most likely cause without charging us for a bunch of costly tests right away. He gave her an injection of steroid and antihistamine, and within a few hours she was already back to her beagle-y self. And with two locations (this and their Abingdon office) we know our babies will be well cared for.

James City Veterinary Clinic and Dr. Bates saw my dog on an emergency basis to have a bleeding mass removed. The vet I was previously going to advised that I would have to wait two to four weeks before my dog's mass could be removed because they wanted to give my dog a flu shot before they would do surgery. Dr. Bates was very helpful and understanding of my dog being in much discomfort because of the mass, and agreed to take her in that day to remove it. This was a god send because my dog was very unhappy and uncomfortable, but now we should be able to have a peaceful holiday. The office staff was very friendly, helpful, and professional. Thank you Dr. Bates and James City Veterinary Clinic! Dr Bates just did a life or death surgery on my senior dog...this was a godsend and my dog has fantastic results...we are very grateful for dr bates and the wonderful staff at James city vet clinic!!

My wife and I brought our 8 week old puppy here who was vomiting and had diarrhea while on vacation in Surry and they saw her first thing in the morning with no appt, Dr. Bates explained everything he was doing and why in great detail, and …

Incredible staff that actually cares about the animals brought in. My cat was diagnosed with FIP, and while every other vet said he was going to die, they have given him a fighting chance. He's still with us to this day

So glad I found Dr. Bates and his wonderful staff! Their office is so caring and efficient. My pets love them. I have been to other local Veterinary Offices and was not pleased. Dr. Bates takes his time and explains everything as he goes along. I have never felt that "rushed examination visit" from him. You can tell he truly cares about his pet patients and their families. The ladies in the office are also good to call with updates (if the pet has to be left at the office--which I LOVE!) And, call with full information and reminders. Can't say enough good things about this office! <3

Got us in fast for an urgent surgery for our dog. Friendly staff. Explained finance options well.

We have two Scottish Terriers. Both dogs love going to the clinic and being with Dr. Bates and his staff. We have boarded them successfully there, too. Both dogs recuperated well from their "birth control" surgeries. Both dogs love the attention that they receive by all at the clinic. Dr. Bates keeps a close eye on our two Scotties and recommended a weight control diet for them. Both dogs love the kibble and have "better bowel habits" since switching to the Satiety diet.

I have just recently started to take my newest member of the family to this clinic. It's a great location. Each time I have called to set an appointment, they have been more than willing to work us in either the same or next day. The most recent visit was one that scared me because of the situation, and they did an amazing job at calming my nerves and creating options to resolve the issue. The staff is amazing and Dr. Bates is very knowledgeable with animals. Definitely a team I trust with my baby "Deacon".

James City Vet Clinic took such a weight off our shoulders when it came to planning our vacation...We felt completely at ease when we left our Great Dane with them. They were very accommodating and seemed to take excellent care of him. They were also very flexible with pick up dates, which we appreciated. We called about 10 places total to check prices for boarding, and they were also the cheapest..by far! Keeping their business card handy for next time, for sure!

Dr.Bates is wonderful. I have taken all of my four legged best friends here. He understands what is in the best interest of your pet and never pressures you to do anything unnecessary like some other vets have done. Kind and understanding with all animals and the rest of the staff is an absolute delight. I've seen the same smiling faces here for years.

Always friendly and helpful. Dr. Bates gives realistic care and doesn't try to charge for things that are unnecessary.
