Staff is so friendly and very helpful and dogs are well taken care of. Application process is quick and easy. We’ve adopted from them 3 times. Very responsive and helpful with any issues or questions I have. They truly care for all their dogs. For all those people saying the are unprofessional, they are here to serve the dogs, not people.

We rescued our sweet hound dog Roger from them in August 2020. They saved him from a horrible cruelty case, vetted him, and started the process of putting some weight on him before adoption. The sad pictures are from them when they first got him at ODHS and the happy, healthy photos are from his life after adoption. The save so many dogs just like him from homelessness and cruelty. I highly reccomend when looking to adopt you go to them. ????

Great organization to adopt from. Myself and my family have adopted from them and we were able to give a second chance to dogs that were unwanted and not understood by others. Always someone that can answer questions (if the information is available) about the dogs.

We are so happy with our wonderful pup from ODHS. We recently lost one of our dogs and her littermate was missing her as much/more as we were. When we saw how happy she was when our daughter brought her dog for a visit, we knew it was time to add another doggo to our family. I went to ODHS after being approved to adopt a dog we had fallen in love with online. When I got there to pick him up, the volunteers at ODHS talked with me at length about my current dog's situation, health, and personality. She let me know that the dog I had in mind probably wouldn't be a good fit for us and introduced us to another one. I wound up bringing him home and he couldn't be more perfect! He was very timid at first, but now, after only two days, he is opening up and very playful, yet respectful of our older dog. She fell in love with him at first sight. The volunteers at ODHS are very knowledgeable and are concerned with making the right match for both the dogs and the families who are adopting. This is critical for long term success. I recommend this rescue to anyone looking to add some love to their family. THANK YOU!

What a wonderful experience! This group is THE best rescue group I've ever dealt with...caring, responsive, professional. They are now my go-to people for my furever family:)

Extremely unprofessional. They talk to you any kind of way . They think because you’re a certain age you can’t afford the dog needs. They talk to you like you can’t comprehend.

They are extremely unprofessional. My sister had to return her dog due to critical health issues she was going through. It wasn’t fair to the dog to be inside all day. They wrote on the dog description “ I was adopted out and returned a couple of weeks after because the owners didn’t do their research on the breed” which was a complete LIE! I don’t know who they think have thousands of dollars to waste because MORGAN training was already paid for and no she can’t get a refund! So instead letting the dog not get what she deserves, she returned her so a family can love on her . I will never tell anyone to go here

Back in May, I adopted a 2 month old puppy (FKA Chick, now Rayna) and I had a wonderful experience with the Old Dominion team. I submitted my application for her at an odd hour of the night and heard back just shortly after to set up a meet and greet for the very next day! Having replied back immediately, knowing then Chick was the match for me, I made the 3-4 hour drive to ODHS the following morning. I got to spend time with her outside in one of their play pens and the adoption process from there was smooth. The front desk volunteers even helped put together the crate I had brought with me to ensure the pup was safe for the long haul back home. They treated me with kindness and were so sweet with Rayna (then Chick) during the process. Rayna has since traveled to different states, made new friends, and will be graduating her second course of obedience training. She is a goofy, smart, sassy girl and I wouldn’t have it any other way! Thank you ODHS!

Staff is RUDE, unprofessional, and care more about their personal biases than giving the dogs a loving home. I applied for a specific puppy, Funky Q, online after seeing him in person at an adoption event. Was told I needed written landlord approval. My lease stating “pets are allowed with approval” as well as a verbal agreement over the phone with my landlord wasn’t good enough. I asked if I could pay his fee and pick him up once the email goes through- they tell me NO HOLDS. My landlord sent the email but unfortunately Funky Q was adopted that day. Two weeks later they make a post about how Funky Q is still there. I come back ecstatic, I have a formal email from my landlord allowing approval, I fill out another application for Funky Q, have the cash and supplies all ready to take him home. Front desk ladies want nothing to do with me once I asked them to look into my application. They said “we didn’t get an email” So my landlord sends TWO more copies and even a screenshot of the correct email(directly from the business card the lady grew in my face when I wanted to double check the email) Front desk “I don’t know what to tell you we still don’t have it. You’re not adopting a dog today.” Leave the place upset, get a new email stating they received my email and I’m approved. I return so happy and ready to take home this puppy. Same rude lady at the front desk then tells me that “we have a lot of interns that don’t know, you’re not approved, you need to leave. Funky Q has an appointment to be adopted” which is funny because they don’t have holds? Or maybe they only hold dogs for personal reasons. I have never in my life have been treated so rudely when all I wanted to do was give that puppy a loving home. The following day I found an 8 month old pitbull puppy at the Spotsy animal shelter and he will be a spoiled boy. Only $85 adoption fee vs a RIDICULOUS $300-$400 adoption fee. Thank you ODHS for being such jerks to me that I ended up finding my fur baby at a place that cares and isn’t price gouging their adoption fees for underweight and sick puppies.

My family got our puppy Jarvis from here. The establishment was well organized, the animals were healthy, and the staff was quick to respond and give us information about the puppies while we were finding our new family member. It is very important to us that we got a healthy puppy, and Old Dominion seems to have it down. Lots of animals to choose from, but sorry, we got the cutest one!! Seriously, I would post a pic on here if I knew how, lol.

Adopted two pups from here. One was a foster fail. My son and gf just adopted their 1st from them. Love how they have expanded to have a better set up for the dogs.

I wish there was more information on animals given or a quarantine period before adopting to prevent costly surprises. Which unfortunately were alot of. ????

Please believe some of the poor reviews. You may get lucky and get a great dog that fits your family but don't necessarily believe what the folks here tell you. Spend lots of time getting to know the dog before commiting. I returned our dog and they were not the least bit interested in why. Just wanted my name and signature, no questions asked. They said our dog had been adopted before but returned and said it was what they called a "Covid adoption". They said our dog was the sweetheart of the shelter and how much everyone loved her. Well, if they adopt her out again, that will be around $900 they will have received for one dog and the dog we adopted needs professional help.

BEWARE! Pretty sad to see this organization was able to hide the review my dad shared. That post shared my little brother was attacked by a dog adopted here, paid $270 for it. The shelter demanded the dog back, and expects us to pay another $270 for another dog. This dog is currently available on their site and only states “mouthy player”! Not that it attacked a toddler, and currently is under a mandatory quarantine! This place refuses to treat known tick born conditions, and refused to disclose aggressive dogs to the new owners!

They turned me down because I had a few tickets on my driving record. What dose that have to do with giving a dog a good home. I have 3 that are the happiest dogs you ever meet. They have lost all my support and I use to give to them alit. Duck this place

After placing the application to adopt a puppy I waited a week like their website said. I wasn’t upset because they said it was volunteered based, but when they were having an open adoption a week later that would have the dogs I were interested in and did not contact me I was confused. I messaged them to inquire about my application, which said I would be registering the dog as an emotional support animal. They said I couldn’t adopt a dog as an esa because they didn’t have any trainers or were able to do a behavioral test (which only service animals are required to have). I told them they didn’t need any of that and sent them a link to a reputable source. The reason I mentioned it was going to be registered as an esa is because I have a no pet policy in my apartment complex. While the dog would be my emotional support animal, I was only doing it so I could have a dog in my apartment complex which they would have allowed per the law. I recommend the volunteers become more knowledgeable about emotional support animals versus service dogs because they are very different. Overall upset because I was very excited to give a puppy at home, but not surprised after reading other reviews of them being unprofessional.

We had a very positive experience adopting our dog here. The staff was responsive over email and very patient/helpful while we made our decision between two wonderful dogs. Would highly recommend to anyone in the DMV area looking for a wider selection. Thanks again!

My husband and I have been fostering with ODHS for some time now and we love it! ODHS provides everything you could need, from food to leashes to dog sweaters! They are extremely transparent about every dog and any behavioral problems they may have. Everyone there is on a volunteer basis, everyone does what they do out of the kindness of their heart and the joy for dogs. ODHS treats their dogs very well. I’m very proud to be a foster mom affiliated with them.

I had a very negative experience here. I had adopted a puppy but sadly we had to return him. My wife and i jumped to soon to a conclusion that our daughter may be alergic without being 100% sure. We tried explaining our situation and all they said was to bring him back with out offering a suggestion on our situation. They were quick to say they had other people to adopt him without giving us a second chance or willing to work something out. To sum up this story this place is only interested in getting rid of the dogs and taking peoples money. The staff here is very rude, have no knowledge of the dogs, no social distancing nor wear masks.. my suggestion to anybody coming here is to make sure that you get the right dog for your needs or other wise they will not refund your money and just give a bs excuse.
