Just adopted a kitten we had been fostering. They did a great job getting her everything she needed, from vaccinations and microchipping to her spay and surgical amputation of a severely damaged leg. Kitten is in her forever home, recovering nicely!

Amazing shelter! You can truly tell these people care for the animals. We adopted a kitten, Roger in the summer has he has been the perfect cat for our family. He’s our own house Panther. We can tell he was taken good care of that the people here are doing good work. Totally recommend for anyone looking for a pet.

This place is absolutely amazing!! I am a first time dog adopter (I just graduated college and have been waiting to get my own dog for years!!) and they were so helpful. I have gone in a couple times over the last couple months telling them what I'm looking for and they were honest when they didn't have the right fit, which I really appreciate. There was no pressure to adopt the wrong dog. Finally, last week, they had a dog that fit my needs! I was able to meet her and the next day took her home for an "overnight". During overnights, AWLA allows you to take a potential dog home for 3 days and 2 nights to test out dog ownership and make sure it's the right match for you and your family. Nell (formerly Norah) is the PERFECT fit for me and my living situation (my roommates ADORE her), and I adopted her! The shelter did such a great job with communication, helping me understand the needs of my new BFF and giving me a certificate for a free wellness appointment to a long list of participating vets in the area. In addition, they gave me all the information they knew about her medical and behavioral history. She came to me fully vaccinated at no additional cost. The shelter is extremely clean and well managed and they have a great, highly responsive staff who actually care about the animals and want the right fit for the animal and the potential owner. I cannot say enough great things about this place. I would recommend it to absolutely anyone-new or experienced pet owners looking to make a difference in an animal's life. PS-if your apartment building or house has breed restrictions, this place is great-their dogs are not all pitbull mixes. Nothing against pits, they can just be difficult for housing restrictions.

Super friendly staff super clean, super organized and the must beautiful baby cats and dogs,,,couldn't find my new babyson(I'm looking to adopt a Siberia husky, pitbull or any mid-sized baby dog because my son Oreo is deaf and Gabriel is very scared of noise or anything else that moves fast or makes noise)

I have spent months looking for a dog that I bonded with and was ready to bring home. After meeting so many dogs I went to AWLA on a Sunday out of the blue even though none of the dogs on their webpage really sparked my interest. (Mainly due to apartment restrictions not allowing certain breeds). When I walked into the dog room the first one I saw I knew was for me. He hadn’t been added to their webpage yet and it was his first day on the adoption floor so it was meant to be. In the weeks I have had him he has been such a joy and a wonderful dog to have. Thank you AWLA for bringing me and my best boy together! AWLA is incredibly well run and really cares about their animals and treats them very well!

We got a guinea pig. His name is Ned Flanders, like the Simpsons, his cage mate was Homer. As for the Animal Welfare League of Arlington itself, the staff were incredibly knowledgeable and could tell they cared for all their animals and they were comfortable. Go here if you are looking to adopt.

These folks do great work in the community. I adopted my first rescue dog there when I was a volunteer. Floyd was the BEST dog, and lived to 15 years old! Please consider donating or volunteering at AWLA or another rescue near you. They provide an invaluable service to the community and to humanity.

So I had to bring my cats of years to the shelter due for many reasons, 1 mainly being pregnant.. staff were great but 2 things that haven’t been sitting well with me are if no one adopts my cats they’ll be put to sleep and I can’t take them back myself, pretty harsh if you ask me .. another thing, I specifically said I’d like for them to stay together because they are mother and daughter and I see the listing and they’re being adopted separately. My sweet Luna and Leah , they’ll always be my babies.. I miss them sooo much ????.. regretting ever bringing them in.

I got a cat from them not even a few months old and randomly he had all these health issues pop up that I wasn’t told about first it was his sinus then it was his bowel movements. Now to find out he has a infection in his intestines.

This shelter was fantastic! We just adopted our dog Canella from them and the process was super easy and they were there every step of the way. I highly recommend them for adoptions being they genuinely care who they allow to take their animals home!

AWLA has given me two of the most precious loves of my life. They’re a great team of people who clearly care deeply about the animals in their care, are professional and make the process so easy! I adopted Nala two years ago and Mané a year ago both as 2 month old kittens. The process, once before covid and once during, was simple, clear, and great. They answered all my questions, prepared me on becoming a cat parent, and have been so lovely. Would definitely suggest you adopt from them.

Very pleasant and accommodating staff. They do adoptions and accept donations of animal related products, food, collars, leashes, clothing, etc. Easy walk thru to see the animals, mainly dogs, but includes Rabbits, Rodents (Guinea Pigs), birds and more.

This is a wonderful shelter! They actually care about animals getting adopted to good people without being worse than the DMV with requirements like the other shelters and rescues I've looked into in the area. I got to take home my beautiful miss Essie yesterday (previously known as Oatmeal but she had been a stray so wasn't attached to it yet and my son wanted to name her). We are so happy and grateful that everyone at the shelter was so kind and made the adoption process as smooth and timely as a safe adoption should be.

Poor service!! I had a snake in my basement, so I called animal control. I was given a website and told how to exclude and trap it, then they would come and pick it up. What?!?! If I was a snake person, I wouldn’t have called because I would do that just take it outside. Instead, I couldn’t go into my basement for days until I was able to pay a service to come get the snake. If they don’t do snake removal, they should just say so.

They've remodeled the public space and it's amazing! I was dropping off a large donation of canned cat food. I would love to go back to see the cats' area (although I have 3 already) and I have a large donation of towels to take over soon. Go here to get a pet!!!

We had a family emergency that required us to go out of state and we couldn’t bring the puppy we had just adopted because it was a small area and the hotel wasn’t dog friendly. We couldn’t find boarding for the puppy because she was too young and not able to be rabies vaxed yet, and didn’t have any friends or family that could watch her while we were gone, so desperately I reached out to AWLA asking if I could pay them to board her there or if there would be a foster willing to watch her while we were gone. They were no help at all, told us to call rover or surrender her. I don’t feel comfortable with a service like Rover during Covid, so we made an appointment to surrender. We ended up having to go out of town a day earlier than expected and needed to surrender a day earlier and of course it happened to be a day that AWLA was closed, so I called their 24 hour emergency line which took me to their answering service who was just about as “helpful” as AWLA. They said a death in the family such as my situation did not count as an emergency to them only something like a dog attack and that they “will leave another message” for AWLA. I told them I’m trying here but you’re leaving me with no other option than to leave her in a kennel at the front door, to which they said “well that’s illegal sooo..” Still waiting for a call from them. I have no good option here. What a poor, poor experience this has been with AWLA who is supposed to be all about the helping the community and keeping pets with their family.
