This place is a life saver. I arrived on a Saturday at 4:57 pm, just before they were to close at 5pm, with a gorgeous, very sweet and playful pit bull that was found running around with a collar and leash in literally freezing (soon to be below freezing) temps. They were so sweet to him and took him in. So grateful, and hopeful his owner claims him or someone adopts him and gives him a good home. I would have myself if I didn’t already have a dog-averse dog lol

Adopted a kitten that they told us had zero health problems, and was just slightly underweight. 9 days after adoption I take the kitten to the vet to be told she has an intestinal blockage, and has had one way before we adopted her. We are now $600 in the hole with meds, and not doing any better they want to do a $2500 surgery, or put her down. Place is a joke. I was told “ oh you can just drop her back off here”.

Why hasn't this place opened back up to help animals get adopted out more frequently..we all know this appt thing is NOT just about covid!! ....So what's with "the appointments" ya thinkk? I'm sure they will say, due to Covid, but ummm...it's been two years now? Are they going to just slooowww doowwwn for tas long as they're here? ? Surely this appt thing is saving Richardson money (which is actually "the taxpayers"....So then, why is that other places, like the Plano shelter were never even down like this. Why didn't they open back up during that long reprieve..remember, its been TWO YEARS? Oh wait a minute. Maybe because the rude, unhelpful people mentioned in many reviews here) can work even less (showing absolutely zero concern for the animals actually getting homes (????) (read the other reviews, and TRUST me, they are rude, over the top, treat you nastily....the woman people are referring to in other reviews most likely is a woman with long black hair, forgot her name, a supervisor years back, but BOLDLY oversteps her bounds to the point you'd think this is a private organization she being the owner. I want to know (you should, too, for the animals' sake) what. IS. happening. to. the. animals. that are """not""" being adopted because employees are dragging your feet to open the doors (and why is it these employees NEVER LEAVE? Allllways wondered this) and got a little comfortable doing MUCH less????? Isn't anybody else wondering these things? Has to be.

I adopted my dog there about 5-6 years ago. Now she’s still happy with us and I also adopted a cat today I’m so grateful also adoption process is easy. And they gave us 2 gift bins for my dogs lol and I highly recommend these people can go there to adopt animals be there’s plenty dogs and cats!

If I could give this place zero Stars I would. The white ladies at the front were very evidently racially stereotyping me and my family, poor service, made us wait forever, just to put us off and waste our time. EXTREMELY unprofessional and horrible service to the animals. I pray this place gets shut down and these poor animals get the proper help they deserve. These people clearly aren't content or happy with their own situations and is far beyond miserable and horrid to inflict their own transgressions apon these helpless souls. Let alone the horrid conditions they put these animals thru, they will manipulate and mind game the hell out of you to take your beloved animal away so they can mistreat them. I pray God helps these poor people and most importantly these helpless souls.

I took some kittens to see if they could at least shelter them.. there mom was no where to be found and we didnt want them dead. I took them a the white lady was super rude and “extra” basically told me she wouldn’t take them and if i took them some where else they might put them to “sleep” which means death. I explained the momma cat was no where to be found but she seem not to care or tried to give me a better option instead of death as a mom cat of 3 she was really rude and NOT compassionate of animals she shouldn’t be working there!

Premise: We were at another shelter nearby and decided to swing by this one after seeing a German Shepherd online here. German Shepherds are very difficult to adopt as shelters have several rules about GSD’s. 1. You must have previous ownership experience with a GSD (owned multiple in our lives) 2. vet records proving, (had in my wife’s purse) and 3. no children under a certain age. Check as we have no children. 4. Prefer no other pets in home. So as you can see GSD’s have multiple strikes against them from the start. Not because GSD’s are aggressive but because they are misunderstood by most people about how GSD instinctively seek to be dominate alpha, are highly intelligent, and require constant, consistent, repetitive training until mature. Many misread dominance for aggression and don’t have the time to train these beautiful protectors. Problem: We were unaware this shelter was limiting visits to 30 minutes by appointment only due too covid 19. (Though not a single person or staff member was wearing a mask, and several standing around doing what appeared to be very little). We explained we were at another shelter and lived more than over an hour away making it very difficult to come back next day and asked if they could squeeze us in for 5 minutes to see the German Shepherd knowing GSD having less of chance for adoption. We were sharply declined to their rules. Appointment Flexibility: Now don’t get me wrong I understand rules. This shelter sharply made zero attempts due to lack of empathy and vanity to possibly accommodate and possibly adopt this GSD increasing her survival going to a good, experienced, home. I think we all know appointments cancel and no show more often than not, and being it was near the end of people’s working day this was very possible someone would cancel or no show. Resolution: At the end of the day this person/shelter needs to learn part of their job is to help find a safe, qualified, and good home for these animals when possible. Not to break the rules but to try work within the rules for those serious about adopting difficult to adopt GSD’s or other animals for that matter. Learn that animals not provided a chance are more than likely to be euthanized due to human rules. Q My fear is due to this lack of understanding/accommodations this GSD will now be more than likely euthanized when she could of been rescued. Fortunately we did find and rescue another GSD from a far more polite, accommodating, rescue center. She’s a real killer! NOT!

Professional, but cold. Did not even tell us they took the cat before we could say goodbye. Depressed.

The staff was really friendly and helpful. We were there to adopt a cat and the cat room was clean as were the little cat apartments. They have good descriptions on their website. The adoption fees are very low too. Highly recommend this shelter if you're looking for a furry friend!

I went to see a cat today for adaption. I have never had a pet before so this was big deal to me. I was very excited! However, when I had questions about the cat, the front staff, one on the computer, was not friendly. I did not know the cages were combined so I thought that cage did not have a number. I tried to tell her, but instead, she decided to verbally go back and fourth with me about the cage having a number. It was frustrating because all she had to do was come and show me, since it was my first time there. I guess I expected a little more help since I was a guest/customer. However, another staff with a uniform did come and show me and I am grateful for that. She showed excellent customer service. Very helpful and professional.

It was super easy to make an appointment. Due to the COVID guidelines in place you will make a 30 minute appointment online. When you get there just call them to let them know that you are there for an appointment so they can let you in. I was there to look at kittens as we had lost a cat to cancer the month before. It was very unique as you are in a room with only cats and you can play with the cat and get to know it. You can take one cat out at a time. The adoption process was quick and easy as well. I will definitely recommend this shelter in the future. The pets look well cared for.

Very rude individual! No one there and they wouldn’t let me adopt because my “time” ran out. No one looking at dogs. Ridiculous!

The people in the front are rude and un welcoming. A chain of events happen where I was on vacation and my puppy was left out and the only way I could save her was by srendering her I want to look and I told them I saw a puppy fitting her description and I wanted to see if it was her but they wouldn't let me through .

They gave the owner 3 days to decide if they wanted the dog, then the next day we called for it & they gave us a time to get him, then called us back saying the dog is aggressive which he’s NEVER been, & instead of letting the owner adopt him they RATHER take his life & put him down . Then the ppl always have a funky attitude, their attitude is just as they LOOK, a Mf mess . They also have starring problems!!!

Because of COVID, all policies are different so the meetings take place in the lobby. Most of the staff were pleasant to work with,.. but a few of the front office personnel came across as cold and judgemental. Nobody wants to deal with the heartbreaking reason(s) why they are there in the first place. And I guarantee the reason is far more complicated than you can instantly judge in a 1 or 2 time interface with the owner. City of Richardson Animal Control, do not judge but please act as a resource during a difficult time for the pets and their owners, who are doing the very best they can in the moment. Maybe a few less glares and a little more compassion.

Borrowed a cat trap to help get feral cats from the neighborhood taken to a vet for spay/neuter operation. No charge. They also take newspaper donations to use for animal bedding.
