I am forever grateful For the love and compassion Family Dogs showed my boy, Wilson. They helped him become a sweet and loving pup. When I met with them about adopting him they made absolutely certain we were right for each other. Now I live with this big goofball and am loving it. They made sure I knew what to expect with him and answered all of my puppy crazy questions. I especially appreciated the way that they ensured we would be a forever fit.

I love this place! Please adopt and support this no kill shelter! After trying for months to find a puppy, there was a group of rescued puppies at the shelter. They are only open a few days a week and you have to get there quite early (if there is a puppy you are trying to adopt) and make an appointment to meet the dog. They only allow 2-3 meetings a day for each dog. Which I think is excellent! So thoughtful for the dog! I recommend this shelter to people looking for dogs as well as looking for volunteer opportunities! We've had Rocket for almost a year and are so grateful to Family Dogs New Life!

Rescue Fenix thanks deeply the New Life Family Shelter. Our fellow earthlings deserve this kind of love from this group and the Portland community. You ROCK.

Can't say enough good things about this shelter, most especially Tiana, who went above and beyond.

They're just shuffling dogs out the door for the quick money. Careless descriptions of dogs: listed online "likes dogs" we get there... Not small dogs. (what?). Plus a lackadaisical, 'so what - tough luck' attitude from whatever female talked to us, arms folded, as we stood in the rain. 5th time trying to follow their directions: Show up first/early (tried that... Nope) Try going on a slower day (Nope today is Monday and supposedly one of the 'slower' days) Email your questions about the dogs you see (nope didn't help because someone gets the dog before you can get there after emailing.) Read the listings carefully (nope see the small dogs part up above) I'm done with this place and no doubt they don't care about customer service or bad reviews but you folks out there have been warned! So much for this veteran finding his four-legged family with this business. Either my money isn't good enough or maybe my medium complexion isn't pale enough. Stay FAR away

Great shelter. GREAT service. They really help you get comfortable with the dog and go over everything with you. Their included care package is great! I had a really bad experience with another shelter, but when I came here it was a totally relieving experience. They care about their pets and the home they are going to.

I had a great experience here about 6 years ago, and adopted a wonderful old and deformed Pit Bull. We went in, went through their catalog, met some dogs, and fell in love. We adopted him, paid the fees, and made a generous donation to the shelter, to support the good work that they do. We had a wonderful dog for several years before he developed an inoperable tumor. We weren't ready for another dog for a couple of years. My wife, father and I hardly every have time off together, and one day we did, and decided to go there and meet a couple of dogs I found on the website. We were greeted by a few unfriendly people that would not let us in, said we needed to make an appointment to see a particular dog... So, I found a foster dog on their website, went to the foster mom's home,. She was rude and unfriendly, but we met the dog and fell in love. Then the foster mom, the dog, and someone from the foster program at the shelter came to our home. They weren't very friendly, and seemed to have an attitude. They decided we weren't a good fit, and gave the reason that our backyard wasn't right for this special needs dog (he needs a safe, escape proof, enclosed back yard, which we have). Our backyard is a total of 1,331.5 square feet. I measured it and did the math! It is an "L" instead of a square. It includes a run that is 60 ft. and 7.5ft. wide, another run which is 47 ft. long, and 7.5 ft. wide. There are two more areas that are 30x11, and 30x3.5 (they didn't even see this one). The backyard is escape proof, and the fence is 6.5 ft. high. Plenty of room to play fetch, walk, run, etc. We are experienced dog lovers, owners, and dog care givers. We are very financially secure. We all get along, are mentally stable, supportive, and don't even argue with each other. At least one of us is home at all times. The dog would be mostly in the house, and on most of the furniture. We all watch TV at night, and I have the couch to myself, and there is room for him to cuddle with me on the couch. We honestly don't think that there could possibly be a household better suited for this special needs dog. These recent experiences have left a bad taste in my mouth. But I still respect them for saving animals, and trying to find good homes for these dogs. I just don't think they know a good home when they visit it!

The set up/procedures they have for meeting and adopting the dogs is a little different, so be sure to read the website carefully. Everybody we talked to were lovely and we went home with the sweetest pup Taco (aka Kitty)

We adopted from Family Dogs last year. Since then we have told everyone we know looking to adopt to go to Family Dogs. The staff are rad, down to Earth and realistic. If they don't think a dog is a match for you they aren't afraid to say so. Would recommend. To anyone.

This is such an amazing shelter! They do so much good for the dogs they care for while they wait for their forever homes! We came to drop off some donations today, and one of the attendants stayed to wait for us to get there & let us meet the sweetest boy named Ringo.

Love this place! I have adopted 2 dogs from here and we are looking to adopt another dog soon. The are small, so sometimes the selection is not great BUT we love working with a smaller shelter. We know they care about their dogs a lot more than the larger shelters and the dogs are less traumatized when coming from here. Would highly recommend.

Although they make their adoption process very clear on the website, it’s still frustrating having to show up hours before they open to wait in line in hopes of getting the chance to meet the dog you may want to adopt. We followed the procedures on a Saturday morning and were given a time slot to come back several hours later to meet the dog we were interested in adopting. The meet and greet went fine but we were frustrated that they had not disclosed all of the pertinent information about the specific dog on their website. Specifically, that she had just given birth a few weeks prior and was not spayed yet. We ultimately ended up adopting from another shelter. Update: Not sure what their reply is referring to. I said in my initial review that their adoption process is very clear on the website. Also, they did indicate the dog had a pre-scheduled surgery but did not specify that it was a SPAY surgery (would definitely be helpful to know prior to going in to meet the dog).

I can't say enough good things about this place. The sign in process took a little bit, nothing crazy, and we were able to visit Zazu with our other pup for 45 minutes. They were very upfront about his behavior issues and background (aggression issues, poor opinion of men, bite history) which was very appreciated, and we decided to bring him to his forever home to work on things. 36 hours later he is barreling into our bed and ok with being touched on his ears/feet/everything. We all still has work to do, but I believe that the awesome people at FDNLS got a sense this would be a good fit, and our silly animal family thanks you!

Our family recently adopted Beauty from Family Dogs New Life Shelter. The process was painless and beautiful. We are so in love with Beauty! She is the perfect companion for all of us and we couldn't be happier! I was so impressed with the staff who helped steer us to the perfect dog for us! We love our Beauty so much and she loves us too. She is quickly shedding her anxiety from not having a forever family! Thanks for everything!

Excellent assistance when we picked out our pup. They want to make sure it's a great fit for both the pup and the family, so they try to make sure to match you with a pup that best suits your lifestyle! Super friendly staff and owners, and we're definitely keeping an eye on their incoming pups, looking for a sibling for our furbaby!

I would highly recommend this place! They take their jobs seriously, try and find the best home for the dogs, and will be honest if they fear a match isn't right. We adopted out dog from them about a year ago. We went in thinking we'd walk out with a specific dog we saw on their website, but ended up walking out with one of the pups they introduced us to after hearing about our lifestyle. Our dog, Friday, is one of the best parts of our life!

Though the dog didn't work out for us, (our Westie was too mean to her) I was so impressed with this place we left a donation.. and going to make monthly donations from now on. (By the way.. LOLA *the dog we wanted* was adopted to another family, so thats good to see) Family Dogs New Life Shelter... You're awesome! Good things to come for you.....
