I have a cat that is a patient with one of the specialists and she has received excellent care. Recently she was very ill on a holiday. The staff recognized her, made sure she was stable then assured me she was. There were a few critical pets ahead of her so we had a long wait, but once the vet was able to check her and run some tests she discussed treatment plan options with me. I won't hesitate to bring my cats here in the future. And they are Fear Free which I prefer.

I gave them 5 stars because they went above and beyond my expectations! My Lab Max was very sick they comforted me and they made him comfortable as they could! I ended up making the decision to put him to down which hurt so bad but they were very sympathetic to me and my family! They even sent me a sympathy card telling me how sorry they were for my familys loss! I highly recommend this vet! They are really compassionate about the animals they treat! I will be back with my husky Skype! Thanks for the compassionate care yall provided! ❤

I brought my dog here when we thought she might have eaten some mushrooms out of the back yard. They took her in and took some vitals while we called poison control. Poison control said that based on the mushroom ID she should be fine. The vet came out and said that they could give her an exam but given poison control's advice, we could probably take her home and keep an eye on her. I don't make a lot of money, so I really appreciated this transparency and we ended up taking her home. I will bring my dog to Blue Pearl in the future.

This hospital was amazing after my dog was attacked by another dog. Due to COVID staffing shortages, no other emergency hospital could take my dog’s caseload except this hospital. They were incredibly kind and compassionate when I was clearly upset, they explained things very thoroughly and were patient with all of the questions I asked. Thank you guys for taking such good care of my puppers!

I've been meaning to write how great these folks are. They were amazing with passing of our sweet little girl. It's been 2 months and we're still having troubles believing she's gone. Blue pearl was kind and compassionate... Thank you all Ron and Iza

I cannot express how amazing they are here at BluePearl. On a Saturday night my 18 year old terrier was having breathing problems. I take him in at 1am and he is immediately seen and it turns out he had a collapsed trachea. This was difficult because my dog has multiple health conditions + his age, which made his situation really dire. However, he was wonderfully cared for by everyone there. In addition, they were amazing with communication. Even though they were so busy, they made sure to call and communicate how my dog was doing and keep me updated on costs. For a poor grad student, this was so appreciated!! They also gave me the option of taking my dog home early, and never pressured me to make him stay because of costs. However, I opted for him to stay for two nights (36 hours total) which ended up costing $2,100. Very expensive, but for 24/7 amazing care? Worth every penny. My dog has a long healing journey ahead of him, but they have made it clear that they are here for me if I need to bring him back or talk on the phone. I am SO grateful for the staff here, and so thankful that they were able to save my dog's life and offer him the care he deserves and needs. Thank you, staff at BluePearl Durham! <3

BluePearl saved my dogs life. Our normal vet looked o eat his illness and Bluepearl was very open about his illness. They were very upfront about cost (if you don’t have pet insurance get it, and don’t blame the vet for cost as insurance will cover the majority). My pup survived because of their care. He had all of the medicine, instructions and love that he needed. The vets talked to us over the phone daily and were super helpful with every aspect of healing out dog. Wr are forever grateful.

Both my dogs were bitten by a snake at 10pm at night. After calling to multiple after hours vets and driving to one but then getting turned away we found bluepearl. They saw my dogs immediately. My dogs stayed overnight and three days later they are fine. The vet was very friendly and knowledgeable even about greyhounds who have different health needs. Great service glad we found them.

My cat was sick - took him here because it was close. I’m happy my pet did not pass on and he did get well but not until I was able to transfer him to my normal vet. I find it odd that my pet had a temp of 103.something at their clinic at 7 am but at 8:30 am in the room with our usual vet he was back down to 101.8 I understand emergencies and convenience has a Cost but why did one day of the same treatment off schedule at my vet cost a fraction of the cost of 12 hours of hospitalization here? To add insult to injury after spending $1800 here they told me I had to bring me pet in to be seen again when I asked for additional pain meds for my cats already known and discussed with the doctor here arthritis - he had bloodwork and an exam here 4 days ago which to any other vet is enough to prescribe an nsaid. They told me I could either bring him in to get the meds or wait for my vet to open on Tuesday - effectively making him be in avoidable pain for the three day holiday weekend unless I shell out more money for another vet to simply look at him and be like yep this 14 year old cat has arthritis ???? Next time I will drive to a clinic that has more compsssion than it does restrictive corporate policies

I brought my dog because he had possibly eaten a bone 4 to 5 days ago and he had diarrhea. I brought him in and the nurse looked over him and then called me to tell me that what she wanted to do was around $500.the doctor had not looked at him yet and so I asked that I would call my personal vet and that the doctor would see him when the doctor called me back they said that he just needed medicated food. when my doctor said that he just needed to eat rice and chicken to reset and help out his stomach from the diarrhea because that was the only symptom he had, he was not vomiting he had no blood in his stool. This place is a scam and the nurses are trying to bring in as much money as possible by scaring you without the Vet even looking at your animals. They then tried to charge me for things I said no to and I had to ask them to take it off yet again

I don't remember a lot about the facility, the doctor, any of the nurses. I don't even know the cost of the service anymore. It was probably expensive. But I had a cat that had an aneurism at home (I can't unhear the howl) and went comatose. We brought her in within 10 minutes (I was speeding), and the doctor saw her right away due to the severity of her state. I got a call back very shortly after with some devastating options. None were good. When I chose euthanasia, the doctor comforted me and said that he believed that was the right call, too. It helped alleviate some of the guilt I felt. When I went inside, they brought the cat over, and he showed me a proof from his testing that she really was in a bad state and reiterated he believed this was the best thing. I was allowed to pet and stroke her while they did the procedure. When finished, they offered me a moment to be with her. But I was horrified that my cat went from OK to dead in 15 minutes, and ran out crying. I was not polite or appreciative at that moment. They sent a condolence card anyway. I appreciate all their care and compassion in a terrible moment of my life.

I received amazing care for my senior dog here. The staff and vet were also very kind and compassionate while working with him. Grateful they were able to take us on short notice on a Sunday.

Do not bring your pets here!! They don’t care about the well-being of animals. All they care about is the money. We were never informed that it would be 1000 to 1200 per night for our dog to stay. It’s costly for no reason. I recommend going somewhere else!!!!! My dog was hit by a car and we were referred here because they would be able to get him in sooner. And they had us waiting outside for 1 hour before they could bring him in. My dog was in a lot of pain and couldn’t stand up and they obviously didn’t care about that. Worst experience of my life.

This is a copy of a complaint to Blue Pearl I sent privately late this spring. They responded by phone, said they would investigate and call me back - and never did. I wanted other pet owners to know since they clearly do not care enough to do anything differently or even respond in the last 6+ weeks: I recently brought my elderly (16+) dog to your emergency vet hospital in Durham, NC. While I do understand that wait times and delayed communication are simply a part of emergency medicine and that Covid conditions don’t help, some things occurred that were unacceptable. I brought in Zoe, my dog, after hours of liquid diarrhea and vomiting - I feared she would become dehydrated and couldn’t stop the diarrhea. She ended up being hospitalized overnight for additional testing (an incidental finding of a mass that was not causing her diarrhea, but was concerning). The overall visit and testing totaled more than $1600. When I was finally able to pick her up late the next day (I called repeatedly to get a status) she was brought out to me caked in layers of feces and stumbling. The employee told me she might need a “butt wash.” I called a short time later as Zoe was having difficulty walking and moving. They said, “we noticed that, but she has arthritis.” They also only then mentioned that she hadn’t eaten or slept and that she was so distressed they gave her anti-anxiety medication (not mentioned to me). I did not bring her in to Blue Pearl covered in excrement or stumbling and limping, and find it unacceptable that she was returned to me in this condition. Please note that I am sending a private email rather than flooding different sites with bad reviews - but I would like a response and explanation from management or I can certainly take this up in a more public forum.

BluePearl Pet hospital was not upfront about all treatment options or about the cost. The price continued to change throughout my pups stay. I was not giving all the information and therefore was not able to make the best decision for my pup.

The women that work the front of this facility are not only rude, they seem to have ZERO haste or worry. They do not properly communicate through the door speaker and come off as though they should not be bothered! This is an awful place for a worrying pet owner!!!! Every vet hospital suggests this place. If before 5, take your pet ANYWHERE else. Be advised on the experience you might have!

Lost all my cats records! We spent over a year trying to identify my cat’s problem and invested a substantial amount of money doing so. Brought my cat in for an emergency and learned all of our records vanished in some computer glitch. For the price tag you charge, you should be renting space to keep HARD COPIES of your records. I was the doctor that day. I felt they should have paid me, because I had to go through all his history again, find invoices in my emails to forward to them, and even tell them what to administer as a remedy for my cat---all while the clock was ticking.

My five year old mini Australian shepherd was attacked by a black Labrador just shy of a year ago. It was one of the most traumatic experiences of my life as I got bit as well in the face and hand trying to save her. I showed up to VSH within 30 minutes of the attack and they were quick and ready waiting for us (since I had called the incident in). One veterinary tech took her in and the other looked at me and said you have to get seen (since I was bit). Since I was stubborn and refused to seek medical help for myself while I waited to hear about my aussie, they brought out gauze and an antibacterial cleaner so I can use on my hand and face. Come to find out later that I had to bring her in the following morning to clean out the wound and have a specialist look at it. Everyone's first thought would be, will she make it, and how much is this going to be? To bring what's a long story to a close, Dr. Cruz was the specialist that saved Kaia's life. The emergency doctor and clinical staff that was in that Sunday morning who spent a lot of time picking out debris from underneath her skin also saved her life. There was roughly 14 days where I had to drop her off early in the morning and she would stay through the early evening to assess the wound, take away dead skin and clean it out. She had surgery to remove a large amount of dead skin and almost needed a skin graft. I expected the costs to be insanely astronomical with 2 weeks of every day, all day care, meds and surgery. They worked hard to work with me and I am appreciative of their effort, their care for Kaia and their willingness to explain in depth to me. The costs were significantly less than I expected. As I look at these reviews, most are upset at the costs of care. Well, if you were to walk into the emergency room (for humans) with no insurance and seek the same level of care, how much would that be? To me, I think veterinarians do not make enough, and vet techs (practically nurses). Dr. Cruz is a remarkable veterinarian with extensive knowledge and skill. I HIGHLY recommend you see her if your pet has cancer, or wound care. To VSH in Durham: Kaia says hi, she does not miss those two weeks, but is extremely grateful for the care you gave her and the years of her life she has back. She has since been to the outer banks, camping in the mountains and camping in Maine. I am beyond grateful.

I always say that, in an emergency, the best hospital is the one you can get to. BluePearl (formerly VSH) is one of the few animal hospitals in the area open on Sunday and open 24/7. We brought my dog to VHS a couple years ago, and I brought my dog to BluePearl today. Overall, for a busy animal hospital, and one of the few (only?) 24/7 animal hospitals in the area, the staff is responsive and, to the best of my knowledge, capable of handling urgent pet scenarios. I’m thankful to have VSH / BluePearl as an option for urgent treatment. Thank you to the dispatchers, technicians, and vets.

We waited FIVE HOURS (there was only 1 other person in front of us), got no results back from our dog's blood work, our dog smelled like feces after coming out, and they FORGOT to give us our dogs prescription. The people were not considerate and it was an overall ridiculous experience. We will never be coming back.

Bring dog to hospital and have to stand outside for 5 minutes before someone would take him, then had to stand outside and write down what I think is wrong with him and what happened and leave on table. They said someone would pick up and call me. It's an emergency the least they could do is talk to you. Never again.

We have brought multiple cats here in emergency situations and they always have taken care of them immediately. Even at 2AM the knowledge of the vets I've spoken to there is top notch. Very impressed and thankful they are available to help at the worst time. It takes a lot of money to run a facility like that so we expect to pay more for emergency care. The prices they charge are not unreasonable in my opinion for the expertise and care available.

Terrible experience. My lab puppy will never be treated here again. From the vet tech immediately trying to do 80$ tests before my dog even saw the vet to the push to try every diagnostic test they could run and multiple X-ray series, it seemed they only wanted to run the bill up. The best thing they did for her was give her fluids. We left with a still sick, over sedated dog and no answers other than “the X-rays didn’t show obstruction atleast in the ones you let us do”. It’s been 3 days and I still haven’t seen a summary note of what we actually paid for or discharge forms promised the night we were seen. (I’ve contacted them and asked for copies). Very unprofessional, don’t waste your time or money.

Our 7 month old black Labrador, Angus went into anaphylactic shock early this morning and from the very moment I called to let the practice know I was on the way they were ON IT. Extremely calm, thorough, and took the time to explain everything to us step by step. They took such good care of our baby and we are so thankful for the entire team at Blue Pearl, especially Dr. Johnson who was there when he first came in and was able to stabilize him and to Dr. Del Valle who continued to treat and monitor him. They made a very scary situation somehow calm and we are forever in debt to them for saving our little guy.

I would absolutely recommend this hospital if you have a pet emergency. I lost my sweet cat at the end of January but the team at this hospital made what was a bad situation as good as possible. Every single one of the staff was kind caring and compassionate. And the vets were super knowledgeable and kind.

I hate to leave such a poor review, but I could not believe the poor level of care my dog received from VSH. The summary of the incompetent care we received is long but I want to provide my story as a warning to others. My dog was treated for lymphoma at VSH and the chemo-related steroid treatment induced diabetes. When I took him in late one night with concerns about his urination, they were able to diagnosis him with diabetes, but here is what was unbelievable: when releasing him back to me, they would not let me see or talk to a vet and would not go over the insulin procedure with me. They actually told me to just YouTube search for a video on how to administer his insulin. I was able to get an emergency visit at my vet clinic but had to rush to get there before they closed so they could show me how to administer the insulin (note: although my vet's COVID-19 procedure was also not to see clients, they of course made an exception in this case as it's obviously vital that I know how to properly administer medication via needles). In addition to this, the overnight emergency vet told me upon delivering the diagnosis that the steroids could have caused the diabetes. However, the oncologist later told me that wasn't really possible and he was obviously already prediabetic (he wasn't!) and that he would always be diabetic. He then recovered fully from the diabetes within 1 week after stopping the steroid treatment, so everything the oncologist said was wrong in addition to being completely and utterly unhelpful. They also did not provide my vet with the information they needed related to this diagnosis and his discharge, and I have never seen my vet actually get angry but she was also clearly and visibly upset at the incompetence at VSH. She had to call VSH to get the insulin dosage as they didn't provide it to me. VSH literally told me nothing about how to deliver his insulin - not even the amount! Finally, the staff was not able to competently release dogs as part of their COVID-19 procedure. On 3 separate chemo treatment visits, I had to wait in my hot car in the 80-90 degree heat for over an hour AFTER they said he was ready to go. I called, checked out, paid, then waited an hour for someone to be able to literally just walk him out the door on multiple occasions. Please don't go here! Drive to Raleigh to the NCSU hospital and I'm sure it can't possibly be worse. It's harsh to experience such unbelievably poor care at such a high cost when your beloved pet's health and life is on the line.

Our 10-year old cat swallowed a good length of yarn (turns out, over two feet!) and we called his normal vet who was just about to close. They had suggested TVRH on Morreene but when we called there the wait was over 4 hours, so we brought him here. Thank goodness we did! They induced vomiting and were able to get out the whole string, possibly saving our cat's life. I really liked that they were transparent about pricing over the phone and that they walked us through their covid protocols, which involved us waiting outside in the car while they brought our cat inside and back out to us. Very friendly staff, took great care of our cat, and made us feel reassured through the whole thing.
