Just a heads up, when you schedule an appointment to get your dog put down they don't give the dog a sedative beforehand. They just give the dog the shot right away. This was extremely traumatizing for me. I was expecting it to be a little bit more subtle. Most people have told me that when they took their pet to a different vet that they gave them a sedative so that way the pet is almost asleep and peaceful before getting the final dose. That was not the case with me. My dog struggled and fought them while they gave him the shot and then he went limp. It was awful. The regular staff was amazing and so compassionate. However, the actual vet that did the shot was not compassionate at all and he made it seem like "whatever, let's just put this dog down". They did tell me that I could stay as long as I want after he was gone, but it was hard to do that. I really wish they would use a sedative so you can talk to your pet one last time and comfort them before they give them that final shot. I hope they know there are plenty of articles that show that using sedatives help the experience be less traumatic for not only the dog, but the owner. I will add that my family has gone to Abernathy for years and have said so many good things about him. The vet that was there the day I took my dog was not Abernathy. I'm giving 2 stars mainly because I know Abernathy is a great vet, but this experience will keep me from going back with any future pets.

We went to Sunrise Veterinary Hospital because my MIL's dog needed his second antibiotic injection. She has been going there for many years and they have always treated her and her pets very well. They are very professional and friendly with a large waiting room.

I will be taking my cat in to see Doc in 2 weeks; hopefully the visit will be less stressful than the anxiety felt before hand. Fingers crossed!

Great clinic! Budget friendly, nice staff. My dog was attacked in the waiting room by another dog whose owner didn’t listen to front desk requests. They quickly went into action, took my dog back and got him fixed up at no additional cost, they called animal control and made good of the situation. I had been to another local clinic before and spent double the money for less interaction with vets, and same types of service. Even though we had the “bad experience” the way the vet handled the situation and genuine care and follow-up calls i received for weeks following made up for any of the bad. I have 3 animals being seen with them and will continue. ????

I made an appt for my cat. Had to wait two weeks to get in. I was told when I got to office that my appt was at 9:40. I write down 10am. Now I admit I may have made the mistake BUT could have easily been person who took appt. The young man, behind the counter) did nothing to make it better. He never even greeted me. He was a heavy young man who didn't seem to be having a good day. My cat has been throwing up so I was anxious to have him seen. To show up, wo appt, w a traumatized cat is not something I want to do. I have not used Doc Abernathy in a number of years but always liked their service.

Dr Abernathy is one of the best veterinarians in New Mexico. You can see how much he loves and cares about animals in every aspect of his job. My family has taken our pets to him for close to 20 years, we will not use anyone else for our pets needs. The only complaint would be that some of the front office staff are unprofessional. I understand it gets busy but communication and front office etiquette are needed. Regardless of that fact I still wouldn't go anywhere else.

This place is always slow and they do not care about you. I called in an order for meds for my dog and they said I could come in and pick them up before they closed at noon and I get here and they made me sign in and wait. Currently been waiting for 30 min to get meds that I already called in and was told to just come in snd pick up whenever. Do not waste your time with this place.

We took 2 of our dogs in to get their shots up to date. They were great with the Dr and assistant. Very gental with Piper the poodle and the the trouble maker Terrier. Been going to Sunrise for years. They are very reliable.

Staff is rude and disrespectful. I was asking for help figuring out how to get my large, immobile dog there and I was told "You're just going to have to figureit out." This is after years of dissrespect, but that was the straw that broke the camels back .

The front desk staff is very unprofessional. It would have been nice to see a crew with more respect that doesn't get mouthy with their paying clients. The amount of stress this clinic caused my pets and myself is, "Unrepairable."

Never can get a hold of any one no one answers the phone. And will not call back when you leave a message. Go to any other clinic and you will not have this problem.

On July 26th I brought my rottweiler in to Sunrise for an emergency because he was panting excessively. Dr. George Abernathy told me he wanted Bolo to stay overnight so he could monitor his condition. Abernathy charged me a whopping $1007. 32 for an emergency visit, various medications, x-rays and then additional costs to view x-rays. Nether he nor his staff ever explained to me what the results of the x-rays were, why my dog was panting so much, and what his status was. At no time did Abernathy tell me or my wife anything at all about my dog’s condition. He did reach out to my wife and me through his staff and said he wanted to hold Bolo an additional two days to monitor him. We agreed to that. Abernathy, prescribed the following medications for my dog on July 29.: Rimadyl—used to treat inflammation. (My dog was not inflamed). Theophylline: used to treat coughs (My dog was not coughing). Chlorpheniramine; Helps control the symptoms of colds or allergies. (My dog did not have a cold or allergies). Furosemide: Used to treat congestive heart failure and fluid in the lungs (My dog did not have fluid in his lungs or congestive heart failure). And finally, another mind-boggling drug prescribed for my dog was Prednisone. A DRUG THAT CAUSES PANTING! The very reason why we brought our dog in for an emergency in the first place. My wife and I looked up the drugs prescribed for our dog by Abernathy, determined he had been misdiagnosed and prescribed medications that were exacerbating his problem (prednisone, in particular, because the pills had Bolo now in respiratory distress, panting heavily and breathing through his mouth. At that point my wife called Abernathy and accused him of giving my dog medicine that could kill him. Subsequent to that conversation my wife discovered she could no longer get Abernathy on the phone because her number had been blocked, or tagged, we suspect, by the receptionists that work for him. At that time, we rushed our dog to an emergency room and had him seen by an internal medicine specialist. After this new Doctor reviewed my dog’s medications, his x-rays, and the notes Abernathy made, he told me to discard the medications prescribed for Bolo by Abernathy. I close by saying it is my opinion that anyone who cares about their pet, or is considering using this Clinic for healthcare, should look somewhere else. My dog was left in a cage on a cold floor for the three days he was there. And he surely was not treated properly for the medical issue he presented with.

My dog Jasmine had a laceration on her side and was bleeding. Called sunrise and they recommended I take her down. When I got there the staff at the front desk ignored me for about 2 to 3 minutes nobody acnkowledge that i was there. I signed in and they told me to have a seat. The gentleman came from the back and asked when was the last time my dog ate. I told them 10am. He said that my dog will have to spend the night. Sunrise was going to charge me an additional $130 for an emergency treatment. They took my dog to the back. I called to check on my dog and was told she will have to spend another night because they were busy and she will be treated after they close. My dog was there for 15 hour and had not been treated. Matthew got on the phone and told me that i had been advise that she would spend another night when i dropped her off. This is unacceptable. When i picked up my dog 16 hours after she been dropped she had not been treated. My dog was treated by a different vet and had to remove additional skin because of lack of treatment by Sunrise Vet..
