Brought our rescue dog in for a second opinion on a mass in his chest, which we were told by another vet that it was a hematoma. The mass had septated and was confirmed it needed to come out. Surgery was scheduled, we were told bloodwork would be done, as well as a biopsy. Upon picking him up, we were told we got a credit since the Doc decided it wasn't necessary, nor was the mass sent out for biopsy, as "in his experience " it was "just a mangioma" that appeared benign. 3 days later, our dog wasn't himself at all, shallow breathing and lethargic. Brought him in, of course not being communicated that our credit was chipping away, and told nothing was wrong. Then after suture removal and a few days later, the left side of his head had caved in and he was beginning to limp. I brought him in, realized a substantial weight loss, expressed my concern of cancer., Doc decides to 7se some pin in his leg and show how it effected his mobility, why, I really don't know, I pressed for bloodwork, thinking I has that credit still, didn't matter, I wanted to rule out cancer. Doc insisted the elevated white blood cell count was infection, and the limp would be treated with steroids for 10 days, by day 8/9, our dog was moaning all night. A third vet confirmed our dog was riddled with cancer. All of this in 2 months time, leaving us to say goodbye. Never again would we be using this vet. Complacency and negligence

Called on a Wednesday morning due to a issue with my dog and was in by noon. The Staff made me feel right at home when I arrived at the facility. Dr.Don is one of the most knowledgeable, compassionate and professional veterinarians I have encountered in over 50 years of owning animals! There is nobody in the 4 corners with more knowledge about herbal medicine than Dr.Don. Whether you have a lion, tiger, or bear bring ‘em in you can’t go wrong!

My husband took our Ping to be seen, Doctor stated he can see her that same day, no emergency price, he was super kind, showed my husband the mite that was on our pubby, gave us meds to give to her, she was set, pricing wasn't 10billion dollars like the rest of vets. They don't over price, they are kind and caring, they didn't get upset because I didn't have an appointment they were happy to see what was wrong with Ping. Ping has a follow up, all in all best place to take Ping.

I had a bad experience in the past when taking a female dog to be spayed, after taking her I got the dog home and there was somthing seriously wrong with her she would sleep standing till she fell over and jumped up screaming in pain. Ever since I avoided this vet, till recently when my vet couldnt take my new pup in I had to find another vet with no other options I had to go to elk park. Scared about the past I thought surely this wont happen twice with years inbetween but it sure DID. I took my pup in on 8/18/21 to be spayed and picked her up of course she was sleepy but very I'll. She was sick to her stomach would not wake up, couldnt eat or drink and was losing a scary amount of weight in a 2 days time so i had to take her back 8/20/21 when I took my dog back in an emergency and panic.all i heard was talk about money and if I could pay to have her looked at before the vet would touch her. i agreed he then took a temp and said nothing to worry about it was anesthetic some dogs react harder than others, well for a spunky up beat puppy I knew better. Between the darrhea and vomiting she was losing to much weight and gettin worse. He then told me it was on set parvo and that it was $3000 if it turned out to be parvo to wait it out and see if it was. That they had also had 6 cases in the office that week alone he was sure it was parvo. I was not informed that the office had parvo or I'd have not taken my dog there anyway. I took my pup home and after getting a shot of anti nausea meds she started eating and drinking and also playing again I thought her to be well. Well I was leaving out of state and took her to doggy daycare. Where when I picked her up had a new vet bill waiting . They called the mobile vet to check her out she had a very bad infection was super sick due to elk parks negligence. I will not be returning here . Thank you to the mobile vet for fixing my girl up we now have a healthy baby girl.

I really appreciate Dr. Thompson and his team taking in my pup on super short notice when we were visiting Pagosa from out of town and she got really sick. I called all the local vets and basically just got the generic “sorry, don’t have appointments for several days” (which I get…). But really appreciated that even though Elk Park didn’t have an appointment, they took my pup in anyways and made time. She ended up having some more serious needs taken care of. Thank you for being amazing and kind throughout the process!

We just moved here January 2020 and didn’t have a vet here in Pagosa. Today we had to make one of the most difficult decisions and have our angel Bianca put to sleep. Our neighbors had recommended Dr Thompson at Elk Park. We called him and he met us within an hour on July 4 weekend, this man was amazing. He was so nice...gentle...and compassionate he let us take our time with her. He even gave my wife a big old hug after she was gone. Thank you Dr Thompson for seeing us today, and so quickly. We couldn’t have ask for a better Dr to help her into heaven — with Sheree Hendrix at Elk Park Animal Hospital and Pet Hotel • Pagosa Springs Veterinarian.

I highly recommend Dr. Thompson and his team. Our fur baby ate gorilla glue and ended up needing emergency surgery. Not only did Dr. Thompson pick up his phone on memorial day weekend while his practice was closed, He performed the life saving surgery with professionalism and care. We got phone calls throughout the day to let us know how our baby was doing, and a phone call first thing in the morning to let us know he was ready to come home. We are lucky to have Dr. Thompson to as our vet.

Called in an emergency and never even got a call back after hours. I waited so long for a response my dog passed before getting to another vet. Nothing but horrible things to say about this vet. They may have affordable prices, but are very unreliable and can cost your dog their life.

When our dog got bit twice by a rattlesnake on 4th of July weekend, no other 'emergency' vet responded in Pagosa Springs. I called Dr. Thompson and he met us at the hospital w/in 15 minutes and saved out dogs life. His immediate responsiveness and dedication was amazing! They gave my older dog acupuncture and Chinese medicine to help w/ his arthritis and he is now a happy active dog. #1 vet office in town :)

THANK YOU ELK PARK ANIMAL HOSPITAL!!!! ~Dr. Thompson is the ONLY veterinarian I would recommend. He , and his staff, are professional, kind & above all knowledgeable. He is the FIRST veterinarian I have had the pleasure of working with that embraces my own core belief of uniting Eastern & Western medicine. I have 4 dogs and recently my two 9 year olds, a Rottweiler & Golden Retriever, became ill at the same time. The Golden was ill with an aggressive lymphoma that was causing her to become lethargic & unable to eat. The Rottweiler had what I thought was a stroke and had paralysis of her left side. Dr. Thompson treated each one with acupuncture , herbal medicines and introduced me to Ozone Therapy. Within 2 weeks, my Rottweiler is WALKING ALMOST UNASSISTED and the Golden's lymph nodes have been reduced to HALF their original size from when I first came in. They are both smiling and eating again. The holistic approach is the only approach in my opinion, treating the entire mind, body & soul. In this case he is able to start the healing process of my animals , but has treated my mind & soul in the whole process and gave me above all HOPE. I know we have our pets as gifts for a limited time, but Dr. Thompson has given me more time with both of them. Thank you again ELK PARK ANIMAL HOSPITAL!! The service is impeccable & AFFORDABLE. We are truly lucky to have a veterinarian of his caliber in Pagosa Springs!! ~Jen Sullivan

For us as travelers and being a holiday weekend, Dr. Thompson was honestly concerned and very professional up front! His personal sense of caring was so obvious and his calm demeanor helped us through a situation while we were out of state. Dr. Thompson is absolutely recommended without reservation!

Being a full time RV'er it is horrifying taking your pet child to an unknown doctor. This place was extraordinary, from the receptionists to the amazing doctor and apprentices. Following the advice of other vet's our 13 year old cat has lived with allergies for years, scratching and pulling out her hair. This amazing vet diagnosed the issue and gave an injection and within 12 hours she stopped scratching and pulling her hair out. My beloved little cat now lives a much happier and peaceful life. Thank you for all the great work. I highly recommend this facility especially if you are traveling thru.

Our 5 year old Golden Doodle Yankee, became suddenly ill after a very active day. He collapsed in our house, was too weak to stand, and was incontinent. This was on a Saturday afternoon. We called Dr. Thompson, and he agreed to see us in his clinic in 20 minutes. After a thorough exam, he stated that he thought he was dehydrated, and didn't feel the need for any further testing. He gave him fluids through an IV line, and we watched him rapidly improve. His fees were reasonable, he was extremely professional. Yankee was almost back to his old self the next day. We feel that without Dr. Thompson's excellent care, Yankee would have died. The dry climate in Pagosa Springs makes it easy to get dehydrated.

He treated our dog after hours and not a current patient when no other vet in town would see her. He quickly eased her pain and treated her accidental impalement with a large stick in a very dangerous area. He did a great job and didn’t charge an arm and a leg. Would definitely go back in the future!

Had a dog in crisis at a very inopportune time- Saturday afternoon of Labor Day Weekend. Dr. Thompson was kind enough to return an emergency call voicemail and talk us down from the frenetic thoughts we were having concerning our dogs condition. I thank him for the help and his responsiveness during our time of need when literally no one else within a 3-hour radius would even take a call.

Only vet that would speak to me on the phone on a holiday weekend after hours to reassure me that my dog was probably not suffering from bloat. So so grateful for his kindness and patience.

Would think twice before boarding your animal here. 1 week and they didnt care to take notice that she wasn't eating. She died 9 days after being put in Elk Park's care. Pathetic excuse of a business.

Was traveling to Pagosa Springs and our dog ate a whole chicken with all the bones. Thankfully they could take him on short notice. They provided me with half day updates and the next day our dog got to come home. Overall a good service and a straight forward process .

We brought our dog in to be neutered on Wednesday 7/1. On Friday we brought him back in because he wouldn’t stop licking and we feared an infection. Doc said he had busted a stitch but was fine because there were three in total. I attempted to buy a cone at that time and was told by the Dr, “I wouldn’t put one on him if it were my dog”, so trusting him as the expert I listened. We took him in again today 7/7 because the wound was looking worse. This time the doctor put him under to repair and charged us $170 which could have been avoided if he would have let me buy the $10 cone to begin with. It seems to me that the doctor chose to talk me out of cheap prevention so he could charge extra for the repair. VERY DISHONEST!

They were dishonest with the charges that I could expect, and then wouldn't take care of it to maintain patient trust. The doc is great, and I was so disappointed with how things turned out here. I had such high hopes when taking my dog here for allergies. At first I had great results and a great, encouraging experience, including feeling like the doc didn't just want to take my money but truly wanted to find the answer for my dog Scout- he even suggested something cheaper than what we first thought. But my second time around when I tried some new herbs for my dog, they didn't work, so I was told that I could return them and I'd be refunded according to each pill, and I was. But I was also charged $15 for a "restocking" fee (they keep them in house...) that I wasn't told about until I saw it on my bill. Then they so kindly offered to ship me supplements right to my house, they charged me $15 for shipping (and it definitely didn't cost them $15 in shipping) and again, no one told me about this charge, they just charged it. I do not appreciate the dishonest approach to the charges. When I told the front desk I felt cheated and wondered if I could get a refund just that time since no one told me about them, he said it wasn't an option. As much as I liked the vet, I would not recommend them because they do not tell you the charges up front and they don't do what they can to help their patients feel taken care of. I emailed them asking for the remaining balance on my account to be sent to me MONTHS AGO, and no one has even reached out to me. I'm not sure if this is a clinic problem or front desk assistant issue, but between the high, non-discussed charges as well as the NO call backs when I was told they would call me as soon as possible, it's enough for me to say no more. My time and money are more valuable elsewhere.

Dr. Thompson and his staff are amazing. My ferrets needed booster distemper shots and they we so kind and helpful. It can be difficult to find quality vet care for exotic pets and I appreciate Dr. Thompson’s knowledge, extensive experience and kindness.

We just moved to Tucson. One of our service dogs got very weak and wobbly and just extremely lethargic. We have not become well established with vet locally as just here a few weeks. So I called Dr.Don and he gave me several suggestions plus a guess at a diagnosis. He was reluctant to give it, but I pressed a bit and after x rays and an ultra sound and a specialty radiologist consult, Dr. Thompson was spot on!!!! Over the phone! We still rely on him and envy all Pagosans who have local access to this extremely intelligent, intuitive vet. Sadly, the diagnosis is tumor of spleen...waiting on path report. UPDATE We drove the ten hours from Tucson to Pagosa yesterday in order to have major surgery with Elk Park Animal Hospital today. Dr. Thompson has reviewed the x rays and bloodwork and report of the local Tucson vet and suggested to me that rather immediate action was called for and to get the surgery done there if the long drive was too much. After much thought we decided to go with a doctor we have learned, from frequent experience with dog needs, to feel 100% confident in and trust. We arrived twenty minutes early...they were ready. My husband was an excellent ICU and OR nurse in the Army and Dr.allows him to observe. Our service dog was given IV fluids, sedative, monitoring and surgery proceeded...Dr. Thompson made the large incision, removed the spleen and it immediately ruptured....had it done so a few seconds earlier or on the way to the vet, he would have died. Had Dr. Thompson not gently encouraged me to have him seen as soon as possible, my 12.5 year old service dog would have died a miserable, painful death.Again, his listening to symptoms and suggesting a special test for malignancy that the docs in Tucson had not heard of and his incredibly accurate assessment of the situation, over the phone, saved my dogs life. Another huge reason we decided to risk the drive is that Dr. Thompson and staff do not isolate you from your pets..depending on circumstances we are allowed to be with the pet in recovery and calm them while the staff frequently checks their post op recovery. This is such a help and a kindness and good for owner and pet. We even were offered good coffee and nice music...We asked for and will receive a house call tomorrow and if all is well we will return to NW Tucson.

Daily for the last month we have used the Assisi Loop from Doc Thompson on our 10-year old male Giant Schnauzer, Stein. Stein has had several problems with his back right leg in the last 3 years, including arthritis and bone-on-bone pain. Many days he has been unable to use his leg at all; but, since daily treatments with the Assisi Loop purchased from Elk Park Animal Hospital, Stein is walking and running normally again. Each treatment lasts for 15 minutes and has given Stein relief from pain and a quality life during his senior years with us.
