Family Friends Veterinary Hospital Grand Rapids, Michigan

I've been a loyal customer for over 8 years and what attracted me to this vet was Dr. Randy Carpenter and his knowledge of the Bernese Mountain dog breed-I actually still have one of his puppies-8 years and still going strong. I've noticed that over the past few years, around the time that Dr. Randy Carpenter was transitioning to retire and giving the reins to his kids, that there's been a rather noticeable turnover of staff. It did make me worry, but I still recognized and got good pet care from-lately it's been from Dr. Sharpe and Dr. Cooper, and I loved that there's grooming connected to the building-in case anything were to happened or the groomer found anything concerning, they could go get a vet from up front and handle everything right there-like how safe and reassuring is that?! Not only that, but it could be a one stop and done process especially if my dog is in for grooming, they could also get a check up from a vet without me being there sometimes. I'm very heartbroken that grooming will no longer be available. I'll still continue to go to Family & Friends for vet visits.

I could never thank Doctor Ryan and Family Friends enough. The care they gave to our lab at the end of his life was amazing. Our other lab and kittens also go to family friends and we continue to have great experiences each time. Forever grateful.

They are great people with so much compassion ❤ ????. Unfortunately my first time going here we had to put our dog down. His name was grandpa. He had a tumor bust and there was no fixing it . I am very happy with the care my cat received when she had an ear infection. Dr. Hagen was knowledgeable and kind. She gave me detailed information and compassion when I was inconsolable. The Vet Tech Kate was extremely nice and gave detailed instructions, instructing me to call with an update on Savi in two days. They truly care about their clients. Initially I brought my cat in for their urgent care services, but now they are our primary veterinarian.

We took our precious little black poodle to be put down on a Sunday, they came highly recommended from our groomer, they were kind, patient & treated our little Davie with dignity. I was very impressed with staff and Vet. It was a terrible sad, painful day but they made it bearable & I will always be grateful.

Wonderful vet! Their staff is so professional and caring. The care my dog received was great and a big shout out to Dr. Davis for going above and beyond..calling me at night with reassuring test results! Highly recommend!

The new staff they hired are unorganized and quite rude, they were amazing 2 years ago but have gone down hill

We LOVE family friends. The entire staff is wonderful and truly feel like family/friends. They have helped us through some really scary times with our pets and I am so grateful we have knowledgeable, skilled and sweet veterinarians and vet techs to take care of our dog and kitties!

"She was going to die anyway" - The manager If I could give zero stars I would. Don't bring your sick pets here. I took my dog into urgent care on Sunday and addressed all my concerns that she may be diabetic or have cancer based off my own google research into her symptoms. They took x-rays that weren't needed and prescribed medication that was useless and unused. They misdiagnosed my dog with an upper respiratory infection but didn't care to do blood work and sent her home where she proceeded to get even worse. I took her back on Monday where they finally did blood work and more xrays, despite the Sunday xrays being clear. This is when I find out she has severe diabetes and an infection caused by pancreatitis caused by the diabetes, nothing close to a respiratory infection. Due to this, I had to put her down. Because she was MISDIAGNOSED she had to suffer another day, another day in pain, another day not being able to eat, another day vomiting every time she drank water, another day being scared, another day being confused, because of laziness and assumptions. I paid over $600 to have to put my dog down. I asked for a refund from Sundays visit because I paid for meds that weren't needed and weren't used and paid for an xray that also wasn't needed. They should have done blood work the first time. I get denied a refund. and guess what the manager said to me. "She was going to die anyway." They refuse to refund me because she was so sick that she would have died no matter what. Excuse me??? How about you take responsibility for your doctors laziness and the fact that you caused unneeded suffering to a dog that was terrified. Having to watch me cry my eyes out as I had to watch my dog die and all you care about is making money. I hope no one ever brings their sick pets here because you truly DO NOT CARE about animals.

Updating- Dr. Bommarito changed our entire experience with our visit today! She was VERY sincere and super caring! You could tell she was not putting on any act, she was generally sorry for us. She thoroughly examined our dachshunds back, and thoroughly explained all of our options to us. She definitely went that extra mile for us by calling around and getting estimates and explaining our situation.

Don't bring your pets here. They misdiagnose animals and glance over obstructed kidneys. They just try to get money out of you by causing you to have to make multiple visits to solve one issue. and when you leave a negative review on facebook, they delete the review and block you. How pathetic. People have a right to know the danger they are putting themselves and their pets in.

This is THE MOST AMAZING vet around! We initially visited during an emergency, where our cat needed surgery immediately for a kidney obstruction that our vet had missed earlier that day. When he faded quickly throughout the evening, we reacted by bringing him here and they were so caring and comforting, even working with us financially.

Getting in as a new client is worth the wait! Our experiences with the staff has been great from reception to the doctor. Not pushy at all, great with my dog, very helpful and knowledgeable, and very fairly priced. And Sevro gives them an A++ too.

The staff is great. Super friendly and very knowledgeable. Actually affordable compared to many vets I've worked with in the past.

I have mixed feelings about my trip to this vet. My dogs are diabetic and I made the mistake of leaving their insulin out for most of a day as I went on a day trip. I take enough with me if I am going to feed them on a trip to give them their dose. It was on a holiday weekend so I wouldn't be able to resupply at my vet for 3 days so I had to seek another source. Fortunately for my dogs I was able to get more at this vet on Sunday but not before there was an exam and blood work. While I understand their thinking, there should be an allowance or documentation that would bypass this expense. I am on fixed income and already have a huge cost for their meds and diet. I didn't need a nearly $200 cost that I felt could have gone the other way. I will be talking to my vet to see if I am able to carry a script that will be accepted elsewhere if this happens again.

My dog was in need of urgent care during regular business hours but the person at the check-in desk did not seem to care. They said they were full and it would be awhile (hours) before they could ask a doctor if they could maybe take a look at her. Incredibly unreliable clinic. Do NOT go here for any type of emergency service, they will not help you.

i called worried about my cat and his health and whoever i spoke with on the phone told me “well if he makes it until tomorrow, you can bring him in then.” very unprofessional and rude to say and i would never bring any of my pets here. ridiculous.

Its very busy, but good overall. I think they lose a little by being so busy, but the vets are top notch. Dr. Ryan is awesome.

Too bad this place is far away as I live in Lansing. Dr Carpenter is the best and his legacy lives in. I would highly recommend for English bul dogs!!

Amazing experience at this vet. We are visiting from out of state and had to emergently bring our dog in. We called four other vets in the area who couldn’t see him within a reasonable amount of time. Not only we’re they accommodating, but the we’re also kind and very affordable. Highly recommend!

Staff is always very thorough and thoughtful. Animals are always first and foremost which is awesome!

Family Friends was awesome! Our 12 week old pup had a UTI on a Sunday. Called and got a same day appointment. From the initial call they were friendly, caring and concerned for our kiddo. I would definitely recommend Family Friends!

The true kindness, transparency, and care for animals is unrivaled. Thank you for your true concern and care for my cat.

They're so great. It's the only place I have taken my dog where he's totally comfortable right away.

The staff is fantastic, no complaints on how they treated my dog. Normal services were slightly higher than our previous vet, but nothing drastic. Until I scheduled a dental cleaning for my dog. Baseline cost for a dental exam is nearly $1100!! Insanity. I called our prior vet which is only a 25 minute drive away to inquire costs to bring her there. Baseline was close to $300. I can’t support a business that does this to their customers regardless of how great the staff is. My dog was cared for just as well at her old vet for a fraction of the cost. Quality of care is great, but the cost is ridiculous. I’ll be taking my dog to her old vet from now on.
