We are very happy with the visit. Dr Hay was extremely informative, very thorough, professional and pleasant. I am very happy to hear that Max didn't need surgery yet. But shall he has any surgical need in the future, would definitely see Dr Hay again. I highly recommended veterinarian surgical! Bonus, you also get lots of smiles from his friendly staffs.

My local vet told me to call them to schedule for a knee injury to my dog. I called them they took all my information and said they need a report from my local vet. I called my local vet back and told them what they requested. Seven days goes by I still don’t hear from them so I call them back again. They told me they never received the requested paperwork from my local vet. So I called my local vet again he said he sent it over so he called them himself. They told him they would review the paperwork and get in touch with me to schedule an appointment. After seven days of limping and putting no weight on his paw they finally called me back and tell me unfortunately they’re too busy at this time for new patients. Eight phone calls later and this is what they tell me! What a disgrace and they’re supposed to care about animals waste my time on hold probably have over four hours in phone calls tied up on hold to be told they’re too busy ????

Dr. Thomas is the most knowledgeable and trustworthy vet I have encountered in the Tampa Bay Area. I drove from St. Pete as this office came highly recommended and it was worth it. My dog and I felt comfortable the whole visit with every staff member making us feel welcomed. Dr. Thomas took the time to look through my dog’s past xrays, read notes from our vet in St. Pete, and examine my pup’s mobility before deciding if surgery was the best option. We ultimately decided against surgery for the time being as her hip was not impeding her mobility and she was not in pain. Dr. Thomas spoke with me and helped me better understand what to do moving forward and what I need to keep an eye out for. I felt relief that she would not want to do a surgery unnecessarily and it showed how great this practice truly is.

My dog Nala had her TPLO surgery here for her torn CCL ligament. The staff was amazing. They were able to get her in sooner than expected for a consultation and had the surgery done within that same week. Dr. Thomas took the time to explain everything they would be doing and once the surgery was done they called me every day to check on her to make sure her recovery was going well. Is it expensive? Yes, but in my opinion it is worth the quality and peace of mind. Nala will need to have this surgery again on her other leg and I will be bringing her back simply because of the quick communication and the fact that the team truly cares about my dog. I couldn’t recommend Vet Surgical enough.

Thank you sooo much to this awesome team! I brought my cat for an ultrasound last week. The front staff were very accommodating and professional. The tech was awesome- reassuring, warm and efficient and the Doc was very kind, warm and detailed in his report of the results. I am so thankful this office was able to accommodate me and treat me so kindly.

I have chosen to edit my initial review to focus on the most important takeaways from a disappointing experience during a surgery consult with Dr Hay. I took my dog to Dr Hay because she started walking with a limp. Initially, Dr Hay advised that he only does surgery if the dog's functioning is less than 50% of the time, which seemed to suggest that our dog might not be a candidate for surgery. Dr Hay then advised that an X-ray might help determine the cause of the limp, and I agreed to the X-ray. Because my dog was squirming around, she was sedated with Midazolam, Acepromazine, and Hydromorphone. Unfortunately, the x ray was inconclusive, so Dr Hay advised that he would probably know the source of the problem once he began the surgery and could see what was going on in her leg. At this point I was confused because my dog had suddenly gone from possibly not needing surgery to a recommendation for exploratory surgery. I also felt like Dr Hay was pressuring me to get the surgery when he started dwelling on his credentials as an explanation for their higher than average cost of the procedure. I was also not happy when I found out that my dog was administered Naloxone to reverse the effects of the sedative they administered. The online research I did after I got home indicates that Naloxone is used in overdoses. When I went to pick up our dog, she had a blank stare, walking funny, and had very shallow breathing. So...after my visit to Dr Hay, I still have no idea what is wrong with my dog's leg, I am out $565, and I was scared to death that my dog had been overdosed. Answer to Dr. Hay: What I wanted to hear, and why we came to see you was "Does our dog needs surgery for her knee?". We agreed to do x-ray right away so you could be able to answer that question. I never got a clear answer to that. I am confused as to what did you think I wanted to hear... When I asked questions about what you see in the x-ray you told me that "I am not versed in these matters". I am not pretending that I am - that's why we sought your consult. You should be. I was annoyed when you told me that you could only tell me what's wrong with her knee during surgery. I would pay any amount, if that would help our dog. You charge $4000 for a surgery, but you are not sure if she needs it. Yeah, clearly - "I am not getting it!"

My dog Kylo just got back this morning after his TPLO surgery and overnight stay at Veterinary Surgical Specialist and he is all fixed up! Dr. Leslie Thomas was extremely thorough in the consultant a few weeks ago and after surgery yesterday and made us feel like our fur baby would be secure, safe and in great hands. The staff is VERY polite and attentive as well, making sure that everything is clear and explained properly. I naturally was worried about leaving him overnight, but the overnight staff was just as pleasant. I am so happy I did my research on surgical specialists when our primary vet suspected TPLO surgery would be in Kylo's future after an injury and came across this office. Thank you all for taking great care of my dog!

Dr Hay and team are 5 stars!!! He is very well respected around the dog rescue community. All hard cases are recommended to go to him, he is the best in Tampa Bay area!! He will also not do surgery if it is NOT in the best interest to do so. He cares about doing the right thing, it's not just about making money with him. My first visit with him was back in 2006 and I'm a repeat customer.

Our 6 year old Charlie had TPLO surgery with Dr. Hay. We took significant time in choosing where to take him, we wanted to be as comfortable as we could. Dr. Hay gave us that comfort. He's passionate and great at what he does. It's been 10 days since the surgery and Charlie is doing great. The staff at Veterinary Surgical Specialist is fantastic, caring and understanding is how I would describe them. We are so thankful and grateful to everyone who took care of our boy!
