VCA Companion Care Animal Hospital Wausau, Wisconsin

The staff here were very nice, but prices were astronomical. I booked a feline spay and was told we needed a ‘pre-op’ appointment. The day of the pre-op, I was recommended $270 in services (basic shots and lab work) and then given an estimate for an additional $470-500 for the spay. We got the necessary rabies shot and left. We are new to the area and unfortunately, no other vets seem to be taking new clients, so I ended up scheduling with our previous vet. After making arrangements, discovered that expenses to travel 4 hours round trip, board our cat for a night, receive the spay, stay in a hotel with water park passes for four, and book a reservation for dinner at the steakhouse, would still be less than receiving the service here. Honestly, we’ll still probably end up a couple hundred dollars ahead. I’m not advocating for going with the cheapest care you can find, but that’s outrageous. I’m not sure why there is such a vet shortage and price gouging in this area, but I’m thankful we have a vet we trust that we can travel to.

I am extremely impressed with this clinic! They are thorough, answer all questions, and help weigh the pros and cons. They communicate via text which is extremely convenient during the work day. They call to check in and truly care about animals. I highly recommend this vet clinic!

They were too busy today to help us in our time of real need. Our 14 yo dog suddenly took a terrible decline and needed to be put down this afternoon. Nope. Too bad Faithful friend. We took all our animals there since we moved here 10 years ago. All 4. But you can tell they are different the last couple of years. If they can bill you for oodles of tests, a surgery, x-rays... It's all good. Good for the corporate bottom line. But if your pet only needs to be put down, there apparently is no money for them and certainly no compassion for your pet in that. Just a terrible unfortunate circumstance you think? NOPE. They did the same thing when our 17 year old cat needed to be put down this past May of 2021. I think that is heartless and cruel. We live 5 minutes from there. They told us BOTH times to go to Mosinee. So don't expect a darn thing from them at the hardest time in your beloved pets' lives. Ella says... Thanks VCA for the 25 minute trip to Mosinee on her last day. Peachy said thanks for your compassion too. If I could give negative stars ... I would. Will NEVER GO THERE AGAIN NOR RECOMMEND THEM TO ANYONE.

After more than 15 years of superb vet service at the Wausau VCA, today they let us down. We had a simple request to fill a prescription for a dog in our care. VCA had the request early in the day and after three calls to check on readiness, they finally at 5:30 pm indicated they could not fill it since the dog was not their patient and the script had to be filled at a “human” pharmacy. Would have been nice to know this when we still had time to fill it locally. Everyone has an off day, I guess. Today was VCA’s.

Over priced and waste of my time. All they want is your paycheck, they could care less about the health of your pet. They switched doctor's onme without my consent, they over charge me for supplies, tests, exam fees, etc. You're better off getting your supplies through chewy rather than their online store or even going to their clinic as they'll rip you off faster than you can say "oops".

Had to have my very elderly gerbil put to sleep, they were very considerate of my daughter's grief and giving us time to say goodbye

My cat was around me for over 17 of his 20 years and was just wasting away before our eyes with major pain. Thanks to VCA he was finally able to stop the pain, thanks for making it so

Wonderful service from start to finish.

Every time we have an appointment there, they insist on giving my dog drugs before he comes in, he has been seen at 3 other vet offices in the area and no one else has recommended drugs before his appointment.

Always a great staff to interact with anytime. Very accommodating. Best vets in town.

This is the vet I take all of my dogs to and all the staff are very nice. They also have a very nice system set up for appointments with covid right now.

Very caring and helpful

We were from out of town, they worked us in, treated my dog with loving care, called to check on her a couple of days later. Wish we lived closer, they would care for my pup.

They are compassionate and Knowledgeable and great at explaining things. They really care about both pet and human.

Why dose my cat need mood stabilizers

I just had my very sick 17 year old dog here today. They were very friendly, kind and informative as to the options we had. They even recommended other vets for the comfort of my dog getting to die at home when the time comes. They spoiled him to the point he actually perked up for the first time in weeks. He left a happy young man!

Tried to charge me over $1300 for an examination, x-rays, and a few meds for a stray cat. After the nice tech working with the vet sat down and showed me the estimate and the ridiculous charges the vet wanted to add, and I had her remove, my bill was reduce to about $570. The vet wanted to add in unnecessary charges like mailing out the x-rays for a second opinion (which was unneeded, the x-rays showed just fine exactly what was wrong with the cat) and intravenous fluids (also unneeded because the cat was only slightly dehydrated, a problem fixed with plenty of water and wet food) The wonderful tech who worked with me is the only reason this place gets more than one star. She's a polite sweetheart, who must have to put up with a lot from people over these crazy high bills. I won't be coming here again though. If I did and that tech wasn't working that day, I'm positive I'd be swindled out of my hard earned money.

Great care and great customer service

For a "franchise" vet, this place is AMAZING! Our dog has had several medical issues on and off since he was a puppy, and they have always been great with helping us, and our dog manage things. I cannot praise the staff enough. Our dog enjoys it so much that he LOOKS FORWARD to visiting the vet here... Even though it's usually when he's in bad shape. Need I say more?
