My dog started limping on 11-11-21 and spoke to a representative on the phone and was told this was considered an accident because she started limping when she jumped out of my car so my vet visit could count towards my deductible. I just received an email my visit won’t be covered and there’s a 30 day waiting period since this is considered an “illness”. I’m unsure how an accident is considered an illness. This company will find any way not to pay a claim. What a rip off. Look elsewhere.

We have two five year old cats and have been paying for this insurance since the beginning. They cover almost nothing and when they do their deductable is super high. Their offering is a scam.

They say they have "per condition" deductible but dont have and refuse to give a clear definition of "condition" and always try to restart the deductible if they find there could find any word used different in 2 bill

This company basically charges you for only emergency vet visits and new issues that arise with your peds health they don’t really take care of ongoing issues or routine things that you would normally need from an insurance company or expect from an insurance company. I wouldn’t recommend this company unless you were Forced to and had no other option

Do not buy this pet insurance! They will find any excuse to not cover your pet. They will claim that something totally unrelated counts as “preexisting condition” and therefore will void coverage for anything possible without telling you. I even called ahead of time, explained my situation (including al the pre existing incidents) asked if it would be covered and they assured me it would be. When it came time to direct bill, they denied my claim. It was a life or death situation and now I’m paying thousands out of pocket when I’ve paid into this plan for years. Waste of money. You can do everything right and this garbage company will still screw you over. Literally any other company would be better I’m sure or just put the monthly insurance payment in a savings account instead for when you might need it. I am disgusted by the greed, ignorance, and lies this company has displayed. Crooks would be the best way to describe them.

Total scam company. They will take your money for premiums, and then find any reason they can to deny your claim. They are bad-faith actors. And when you finally do cancel, you have to be on the phone with them forever. Take your money to a more reputable company. These people are garbage.

I got Trupanion insurance for a male Bichon puppy when it was around 12 weeks old. The cost for the insurance was $81/mo. He is now 30 months old. He had been to the vet several times because he kept throwing up for unknown reasons. Never received a penny reimbursement. In February, the price increased almost 34% to $111/mo. I was told that service costs in the area were reevaluated and costs/issues may have increased for this breed. I asked to see the data that attributed to the increase but wasn't provided the information. One reason given was that pets weren't being taken to the vet for the past year due to COVID and now there has been a large increase in claims. Interesting there were no refunds/discounts during COVID when pets were not being taken to the vet. I have car insurance, home owners insurance, life insurance, umbrella insurance - none of these have ever increased by 34%. I just want people to know, this can and will happen to you if it hasn't already. The Review rating for Trupanion is 4.1. During the past year, there have been TWENTY 1-star, FIVE 2-star, and EIGHT 5-star ratings. That is 33 ratings for 70 out of total 165 possible stars. So the rating for the past year is 2.3

Like many other reviews here, they will deny claims based on “preexisting conditions.” I became wary of this company after being denied coverage on an ear infection for my 8 week old puppy. I purchased a policy for him the day he arrived, and took him to the vet for a general health inspection the next day. A few weeks later he developed an ear infection that was not covered because it was within the 30 day waiting period for illness. I understand the policy but left a negative review with them after receiving feedback via email. A representative called me the next day based on my review, and I asked to see what would not be covered for the lifetime of my puppy, as a simple ear infection was denied and now a preexisting condition. 6 weeks later I received a report that all dental issues would be denied based on the vet visit the day after I got him, which noted “dental disease.” On an 8 week old puppy. Who is just getting his baby teeth. That the vet made no indication about any dental issues. Now they’re just making stuff up. I’m cancelling this policy immediately.

Highly reccomend Trupanion. I can not reccomend Trupanion enough. I purchased Trupanion insurance when I brought my St Berdoodle home, hoping I would never have to use it, or at least not frequently. At 18 mos old my St Berdoodle was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease VKH/Uveodermatologic Syndrome, there is no cure only suppression. After paying my deductible Trupanion was true to there policy - every invoice i submitted was paid at the 90/10 split (not the office visit charge but meds and tests, and there were plenty of those). To finish the story, after 3 short years, Trupanion covered Hanks end of life services and without being asked promptly cancelled my insurance and refunded the prorated amount for the month. WOW, just WOW! They, along with a fabulous veterinary practice, gave my Hank the best shot at life for as long as possible. I will never regret the decision to use Trupanion. Absolutely worth the investment.

Very disappointed. Paying over 200$ per month for my two indoor cats, for months... I just realized it would make more sense for me to put it aside for any unplanned expenses. So I requested a cancelation. The representative on the phone was extremely pushy, basically accusing me of ruining my cat's lives because of wanted to put money aside instead of continuing paying the company. She was extremely rude and the whole conversation was very umpleasant. If I had any doubt about ending my plan with Trupanion, this person simply made it easy to decide to never get anything from Trupanion anymore. Awful customer service. I wish I had saved the name of the person to mention here.

I thought this company was great but the extreme rate increases on a yearly basis are getting pathetic. they claim its not due to the age of your pet or amount of claims but to increase premiums steadily by at least 20% per year is pathetic. sadly, I haven't even filed a single claim for my pet either. I'll be looking elsewhere for coverage, the fee gouging needs to stop. update: another year has gone by, another 30% increase in premiums. this company is absolute trash.

Waste of money. They find a grey area or loop hole in everything in order to not to pay. I have two dogs enrolled, one a ten week old puppy, and they’re already denying claims or things they state they cover. Lies. Not to mention every time you call you get an incompetent lazy, work from home person, whom knows nothing and they all tell you something different. Not helpful in an emergency situation where you expect them to be there for. Advertising for quick help when you need it is a joke. Takes five days to even be reimbursed, but they sure make you think it can happen in minutes! :/

When I purchased this policy, the terms were the deductible will only be taking one for the same type of problem. Example being diarrhea or gastroenteritis, receiving there’s more than one time you would only pay the deductible one time in a lifetime. Besides the fact that the premium doubled this year which is insane. My job had diarrhea and Gastro numerous times and they still continue to take a deductible and I never get anything back. This is a bunch of BS I am in the process of fighting this now especially since I am home dealing with Covid I do not have to let things slide as easily. $400 a month I think I should not have to pay a deductible again

So much money wasted. Claim was not easy to file and was denied. I will be starting a regular savings account for my baby instead of this nonsense.

Noticed a premium increase this year and would have appreciated more clarity when purchasing the product. The answer is it's always in the policy wordings, but if someone has issues with English that information is almost useless.

Remember, this is just an insurance company at the end of the day and they will try to find ways to not pay out claims. Work diligently with your veterinarian to write up your visit summary so that they can't pick it apart to put multiple deductible claims (incidences) on a single surgery or visit; leaving you paying the entire bill, even if it's well past your deductible. They have veterinarians that couldn't make it in the real world working for them to find ways to deny your claim. They once threw some very outdated clinical data at me to try and say my animal's incident was pre-existing. So we threw newer clinical data back in their face that refuted their claim and threatened with legal action if they wanted to go down that road. They paid. It's the typical insurance game with these clowns and if you play to win, you will. Just don't give up!

All those great promises about how great they are and how awesome the coverage is went out the window when i made my first claim and they started with the excuses as to why my claim was not covered. Very first claim, a week into signing up. Way to make a great impression. I went elsewhere. To respond to your reply about calling, i've already called, i've already talked to someone, i've already appealed, and still got denied on some bs technicality. Get lost

If I could give a zero I would. DO NOT USE TRUPANION FOR A RESCUE!! THEY WILL CLAIM PRE EXISTING! We rescued a puppy on December 14 2019 and purchased Trupanion insurance. Our puppy with her 3 siblings were abandoned by mom at birth. They were rescued and bottle fed soon after. Once starting on kibble our pup had some diarrhea, so we took to vet for a full check up. Fast forward one year. . Pup has diarrhea and a fecal test, blood test and meds ordered. Denied. Appealed and denied. Laughable that they have linked the two. Looking for a new insurer.

I've been paying over $70/mo. for pet insurance for our 11-lb. rescue Chihuahua mix. We obtained insurance for him when we got him at 4 years old two years ago, and now Trupanion is jacking up the prices! In a pandemic with so many people out of work they decided to hike their prices. To date, I've seen little if any value in this insurance, and although that day may come, I could certainly be saving on my own for that without the added $86/mo. (now). I decided to go with a higher deductible (which, by the way, you can never change once it's set in stone now), so once I get a job again, I cannot lower the deductible and pay a higher monthly. Where is the competition folks? NOT a happy customer.

We can't thank Trupanion enough! We have have a Trupanion policy on our two dogs since we adopted them. Recently, our 3 year old dog got diagnosed with Lymphoma which typically has a 3-6 month life expectancy. With the help of Trupanion, we were able to eliminate the financial stress of our treatments. We submitted over $6,000 in claims that were reimbursed with no complications. 4 months later, our Oncologist has said that our pup has no signs of cancer or any reason for the Lymphoma to come back. ????

Poor customer service. I had sent five or six emails, asking about a straightforward question. But customer service replied to none of them. To think that I've been a customer for the past decade, they would have the decency to respond to my request promptly. When I finally reached someone, they dared to tell me that they had responded to my emails—what a shame.

Having Trupanion for almost 5 years with no claims the pup had to go in for an expensive surgery thought no problem That's why we have pet insurance for a reason. Trupanion denied my claim I appealed multiple times with no success claiming it was a preexisting condition and when I canceled my policy Trupanion had said they had records that my vet secretly gave them without my knowledge making almost everything that can go wrong with a dog a preexisting condition that was not even related to the surgery he had. this company is a another insurance scam and should be investigated! I will save my 90 bucks a month and take care of our pets without worry of claims being denied.

What a disappointment. I wanted to love them, but their subjective view of medical tests and their validity are totally disheartening. Not sure why would continue to pay a large monthly fee when their is a strong possibility that they won’t cover the illness.

I love Trupanion! We have had 3 kitties with Trupanion. Each condition pays at 90% and you just do the 10% - and that condition is for the life of your pet. It has made it possible to do the exams, diagnostic imaging and assessments our kitties needed when they needed it without concern. I can't say I'd ever have a pet without Trupanion. Thank you very much!

Extremely high monthly costs. Met my deductible and had well beyond that cost after the fact and they covered a ridiculously small amount. Hate that you had to talk to someone to cancel! I missed their call, called back 3 times, and didn’t hear from them for days. Requiring me to speak to someone on the phone so they can try to talk me out of canceling only makes people not like your company more.

Preexisting conditions… the bane of healthcare. We (sort of) fixed this for humans, but the animal insurance world is the Wild West. Be extremely careful before buying insurance for your pet through this company (or their competitors for that matter). If there is ANY documentation out there, Trupanion will find a creative way to tie present issues with preexisting conditions (they have employees on staff to do it). I am not writing this review so I can "speak with a Trupanion representative in more detail about my claim.” I am writing it to advise others that you need to outweigh the cost of spending $100+/month/X years for pet insurance with starting a pet savings account. If you have a brand new puppy, pet insurance is worth considering (but be cautious of breed-specific exclusions). If not, consult with your vet to see what “conditions” might preclude your pet from being covered. I learned the hard way (an ingrown hair in my dog's paw was tied to a possible skin allergy 6 years prior, among many other claims that were denied citing obscure correlations to prior vet notes). Long story short, it can be expensive to have a dog/animal/pet, and it’s our responsibility to take care of them, but getting pet insurance is not the surefire “insurance" they market it to be.
