There are very few animals. There must be a huge number of animals that are not taken in or put down. The little town that I'm from takes care of many more animals, smaller footprint, and they do a great job. Maybe start by getting more animals per enclosure..

We went here today to check out dogs available for adoption. This is the cleanest animal shelter we've ever been to. No foul smell at all! So far, we're eyeing on this friendly dog but we don't have the money to get him today even to have him on hold. Hopefully this weekend we'll adopt him for sure and give him a forever home.

The staff was very rude and to make matters worse, it's a kill shelter.

I absolutely love this place. The shelter is organized and allow space for each animal to have their own individual space and when you go to adopt they have a playroom that you get to bring your animal in to play with before adopting. My cat was taking care of so well that when I brought her home I hardly noticed any trauma. She integrated so seamlessly and I attribute that to the wonderful staff and volunteers who care so much!

My roommate adopted Spooky from here. He's a great cat and has adjusted really well. The facilities are always clean and the staff is really nice. We've been here multiple times and it's always a good experience!

I volunteer here and absolutely love it! This place tries so hard to find forever homes for their animals and makes sure they are as happy and comfortable as possible for the duration of their stay. The “high” kill rate that I have seen in other reviews is simply not true, the only time an animal is put down is when it is truly the most humane thing to do for an animal. Also the other reviews complaining about the holding system, the shelter can not control how many people are interested in an animal. Their job is to make sure the animal finds a loving home, and if an animal is friendly, cute and lovable of course it’s going to have lots of interest. I’ve volunteered at other shelters and humane societies and this place works much harder to care for the forgotten, neglected, and misplaced animals in the area. They are clean, organized and the staff truly love and want the best for the animals.

I have emailed them numerous times in an attempt to possibly adopt a pet. They have not responded and have no pets on their site to even look at. Awful!

I love this humane society and all they do in the Central Oregon community! The staff is always super friendly. The dog and cat kennels are clean and taken care of.

I am a volunteer here and I have adopted 2 dogs from them over the last 6 years. One was brought up on a transport from a high kill shelter in Southern California and the other was a stray with many medical issues which I was told about before I adopted him. They are definitely NOT a high kill shelter as many of the uninformed reviewers have mentioned. They are the only "open admission" shelter in Central Oregon. Which means anyone can surrender an animal for whatever reason. Other shelters turn away animals that they don't feel like they cannot adopt out. Without HSCO our community would have a lot more stray animals than we currently do. Also the "holding process" is standard for stray animals so that their owners have time to locate them. Lastly, it is ridiculous to see people complain about a $100-$300 adoption fee. If you bought an animal from a breeder and then have to pay for them to be spayed/neutered, microchipped and given shots you would be spending a lot more than $300.

The people there are very kind. Every time I go to look at the dogs a dog is always being taken out to go for a walk and to get exercise. They are always kind and understanding. I love goung to the Humane Society. It is always noce too visit the dog little animals and the cats. Thank you Humane Society for taking care of the animals.

I adopted a dog from this place. It seems like a lot of the negative reviews are from several years ago. My dog developed a small abscess where she was spayed, (at the HS.) i called to ask about it and they told me to bring her right in. They drained the sore and gave me antibiotics and pain meds FOR FREE. They let me come in early, before they even opened in order to work with my schedule. These people are great. p.s. to the guy who got upset about having to regularly check if he was on a waiting lost - LOL I had to wait THREE weeks for my landlord to get back to me and you better believe I was at the shelter several times and calling to make sure she hadn't been adopted yet. If you're not willing to put in the effort to get a shelter animal, then go the lazy route and buy one from a breeder.

We were in the process of adopting a cat and we had expressed that we are 100% ready to adopt a specific cat. They told us all we had to do was wait as they called our landlord to get approval on our pet security deposit which was 500 dollars and that we could go out and get lunch or run some errands. We come back and in that hour someone else had come in and placed a hold on the same cat. Somehow there hold was more important than our guarantee to adopt the cat and we were now second in line for the cat. Today we just found out that person got the cat and the only comfort they gave us was that they get cats in every day and we can always check back in for another one even after spending the time to chose that specific cat for our home. Now we are down 500 dollars on a pet security deposit with no cat to show for it. A man who had helped us was very helpful but a woman working front desk yesterday was not and was being very rude to us after we told her how we felt we were crossed by there system.

Came to the shelter and found our perfect dog for our family and asked to have the paperwork started. The staff asked me to wait in the play room with the dog because it would be about 20 minutes until everything was ready. I came out into the hallway about 10 minutes after that and I overheard a member of the staff talking to another staff member putting us down and degrading us because we have children with ADHD. We adopted the dog and he has been amazing but the staff at this humane society are completely unprofessional and rude.

Disappointed and frustrated, Took care to attempt to provide a home for new puppies GERMAN SHEPARD /LAB which H.S. intake got wrong, within days, at 9 weeks, changed names, haircut, spayed and a $300 price tag, which will keep them from real caring homes even longer. Thank god they were not children, though someone should have stifled the staff's reproduction system, without having parental consent. Seems fair! My apologies to those that acquire Brit, Tippers, Star, or Striper, given names of the female Shepard /lab pups surrendered on the 5th of March, to be given by staff that has a difficult time getting money and gems out of the forefront of their mind.

I eventually was able to adopt a dog, but it was a difficult and upsetting process. Every time I would go the dogs already had holds placed on them. This is disrespectful and very disappointing to those wanting to adopt. I finally lucked out finding a puppy with no holds, but I am retired and have the time to do this.

I lucked out and got a sweet cat that had no holds but my sister adopted a rabbit and 2 days later she had to put it on antibotics for snuffles which spread through my 4h herd!!! They told her he had a slight repetory problem that had been treated and that he would stop wheezing after a few days but he only got worse. He survived but i lost 3 rabbits to the snuffles. And there high kill rate is sickening, they barly have any animals in there but they still have a HIGH kill rate.

I adopted two cats for my home as companion pets from the very beginning I was in love with them and they had much love to give in return! Turns out Pumpkin needed medication which I paid for every month and gladly give to him every morning and he does just fine you should live a long life! Tiger goes to bed with me every night and stays in bed with me until I fall asleep I love both of them very much and I thank you for letting me adopt them!

The Shelter itself isn’t bad and the people are nice, but the holding process and their system of how they handle things needs a little work. I’ve been out in several wait lists for animals and was never told that I had to call to check on the wait myself. I wasn’t even told when the people before me missed their window. Even when it was MY turn in the wait list I never got any form of notification or alert or call that it was and you’re pretty much just left in the wind to call on your own time and ask? And if you miss it then you're SOL.

I adopted a cat from HS a couple years ago that was supposed to be good with other cats. She wasn’t. The person kept giving me hints that she may be difficult because she was a calico. I said i had lots of calicos and they are no more difficult than any other cat. The cat was listed as cat friendly! I asked if i could see how she reacted to other cats, the girl said no! That should have been a red flag. So i did everything that i was supposed to do to introduce her to my other cat and she wasn’t having it. She terrorized and traumatized my other cat. I called to return her, but they said to give it more time. She ended up getting outside by accident and got killed. I felt horrible. Never again. HS lies about their animals, totally irresponsible. I got two free kittens from someone off craigslist and they have been a joy. They get along great with my orher cat and dog., from now on they will not get my support.

Probably the worst experience ever. Ive raised the most aggressive breeds known but this womans only answer was "you dont know anything about THIS breed of dog". Telling me with a straight face that rotts were bred to "please" people. If youve had your dog for 11 years and cant trust it alone lady, thats YOUR fault, not the breeds.

I volunteer at the Humane Society every week. I have been to other shelters in different states and I can say this one has people who love and care for these animals. These animals come to the shelter abused, neglected and scared. They play music for the animal to help with the stress. They care about the animals and try their best at finding the right home for them. I love my animal friends and I try to help them with talking to them, massage those in need, doing Reiki on them and just giving them the best I can. I think the shelter does a great job helping the animals in need. Irene

I've spent a great deal of time at HSCO. The staff is great. The animals are given a great deal of love during their stay. All these negative comments are totally unfounded.

I had a great time looking at all of the pets. The thing that I like the most about this shelter is because they don’t put the animals down after a long time at the shelter!!!
