I agree with the woman who posted that she has absolutely no idea of how to talk nicely to people. There was some miscommunication in the first cat we wanted was on antibiotics and we were told to try and adopt another cat. But I’m not going to go into any situation here but very very rude

It’s very very hard to adopt a dog from this shelter. Especially from this one lady, she has blonde hair and I believe she is the manager. I love the shelter it self. Very clean and maintained but the staff really needs to work on their ways of speaking to people. I had an extremely hard time adopting my dog from there. It even got to the point of this particular lady calling me and basically asking personal questions. I get that it’s their job to make sure it’s the right fit but to get to that point it’s ridiculous. Of course I’m extremely grateful that I have my dream dog but I had to fight hard for her. I had every qualification to show and prove to them I was the right fit and still gave me the absolute hardest time as well as being extremely rude to me. Which btw they said at the time the dog I was trying to adopt said that she’s a monster and extremely violent as well as bites everyone and other dogs but then she was supposed to go on TV for the news the next day. They were trying so hard to make sure I don’t adopt her. The day I finally was able to take her home one staff member took her by the harness and just plopped her on my car seat. The dog hasn't bitten one person or any other dog or cat. Just go into this shelter with not much expectations of walking away with a dog or cat. They denied my sister for absolutely not reason of adopting a dog. I truly recommend rehiring new staff for this small lovely shelter. It would be such a better experience for people looking for a new best friend.

This was my first time adopting from a shelter, so when I was informed that they had gotten a litter of puppies that I was interested in adopting, I called and made an appt to see puppy. And although it was along process and steps that was taken to get adoption finalized, it was worth it. I adopted my self a beautiful puppy that was spayed, microchipped, dewormed, and almost fully vaccinated. The staff was great, the animals are cared for and loved. At the end of it all I was very happy with the process and care that staff go through to ensure all these animals get a good home. Thank you Little Shelter you have a client for life.

We decided to adopt a dog rather than buy one at a pet store when we heard how full all the local shelters were with abandoned and abused dogs. We adopted "Teddy" with the help of the good people of Little Shelter. They clearly love animals and take great strides to make sure they are placed in the right homes. They walked us through the process. They were kind and professional. They made sure we were informed and that the match was right. They called our references and did a thorough check to insure the fit was right. Teddy was well cared for. He was medically supervised and the run down on his temperament was spot on. I will be donating to support their mission and looking to them in the future.

Let me start by saying I have adopted all my furry companions (2 dogs, now 3/ 1kitten) from little shelter since I moved to the area 26 years ago. Unfortunately I recently had to say goodbye to my 2nd dog after 14 years.. naturally we went to little shelter first. And we ended up adopting a very shy little girl (5months) rescue from PR. I personally admire and understand the vetting process. It’s not a big deal. But in particular I’m so thankful for the sit down n practical advice I was given. BECAUSE my dog got out 1 week later! I remember the advice. CALL the shelter immediately! Don’t be embarrassed. They came on a Sunday right after I called. And found my dog an hour later. They are a great shelter and really care about all their babies. Great operation top to bottom! Thank you Thank you! Remember if your dog escapes call them and all the shelters nearby! Love Little Shelter. Thank you again!

This place is great! My grandparents adopted a dog the other day and they took care of it so well. They truly take good care of their dogs and other animals. Would recommend

I went to look at the dogs there. The staff was nice and friendly however they did ask questions of kids ages at home and if my partner is aware I'm thinking of adopting. I realized the woman was not being nosy but just trying to make sure I was aware of the difficulties of adoption. It seems they get a lot of people who don't realize the commitment involved. It is nice they are being protective of the pets. I didn't adopt yet but I did enjoy meeting a few furry friends. I'll return soon to see if i click with anyone :).

I found my dream doggie soul companion here six years ago, which is why I give this shelter 2 stars...as well as the cleanliness. However, after recently attempting to adopt a dog, I'm very disappointed. My parents had tried a few months earlier, at my recommendation, and had an even worse experience that included age bias statements. The disorganization here in calling, following up, and over- or under- screening candidates means fewer animals are finding good homes. The system, and management, need an overhaul. The woman in charge is extremely rude. Of course any adoption denials - even due to their confusion and irrational policies - means the pet gets adopted out from under you after days of effort and they keep the non-refundable donation deposit. Quite the scam at the expense of animals and animal lovers, as evidenced by many other reviewers. Thankfully, we found the second doggo companion of our dreams at a shelter in Calverton.

as a dog owner i really do know when i meet people who are genuinely interested into changing a dogs life and getting them a better life situation. every worker there from kennel workers to the adoption counselors to the mangers to the trainers are all very lovely and know what they are doing , their buisness has been around for more then 90 years and that clearly means something as well , if your looking to change a dogs life and willing to go through their process of adoptions you will get your forever fur baby❤️

I volunteered there and got to know the staff. They are the most dedicated and honest people who take the animals they shelter to heart. They regard the animals in their care as their primary responsibility..

"Amazing place with tons of adorable and friendly animals"- this was my naive post from 3 years ago I feel this place is the worst to adopt a cat. I would recommend another shelter don't even try for the cats.

This is by far the worst experience i’ve had visiting an animal shelter. If you want to be emotionally battered and discriminated against this is the place for you. The only good thing about this shelter are the animals, the staff were rude and gave off bad energy. When I say staff I mean by that karen lady you will know what i’m talking about when you see IT‼️‼️

This place literally made me want to end my life. The staff was so degrading and rude. I feel bad for the pets that have to deal with that negative energy everyday.

While i know they do intend to have the well-being of animals in their care at heart, they have made it apparent that instead of going the extra mile and showing intentioned follow through on behalf of a dog owner, they will let spiteful and sick people manipulate the opinions of the staff to keep a loving and incredible person from getting his beloved dog back. They would rather deprive someone of his dog, due to the empty and hollow words of people who obviously didn’t want the dog in the first place, than actually investigate and do proper follow through. And now a dog will have to go through the stress of a shelter and being rehomed rather than go back into the hands of someone who absolutely loves and cares for all animals better than anyone i know. Poor decision making on the staffs part, and hopefully they are not as easily manipulated by spiteful and vengeful people who dont have a dog’s best interest at heart in the future.

A cat was found in my neighborhood. I took the cat to my local vet because the cat had a hole in its side. The vet scanned the cat for a microchip. The cat had a microchip and the microchip came back to Little Shelter as per the microchip company. My vet called little shelter and was told that the cat didn’t belong to them that it was from a clinic they held. I called Little Shelter and spoke to a very rude woman that said my vet never called. To make a long story short - I called and left several messages on multiple extensions with no call back. Two months later I brought the cat into my vet and paid for the surgery. I spoke to Diana the days the cat was at the hospital and was told she would take the cat but would not be able to commit to getting me reimbursed. She said she would reach out to the executive director to see if they would be able to help with the bill. Spoke to Diana today and was told that she spoke to the executive director and was told they would not take any responsibility for the bill. Little Shelter has been in existence for almost 100 years and I think it’s disgraceful that they abandoned a cat that is registered to “Little Shelter”. If anyone had called me back I would have gladly had them pick up the cat. Once the cat was at the veterinarian I felt I should do the right thing for the cat. I would never abandon an animal that was under my name and think the general public should know the way this shelter operates. I did rescue for over 30 years and would never abandon an animal that was registered to me. As a matter of fact, I didn’t allow microchips to be changed to the new owners name. It was the only way I could know if one of my rescues was abandoned.

This place should put on theyre website requirements of ages a kid can adopt a dog! I called ahead of time and asked requirements never was mentioned of child in home had to be 16 plus.! These dogs here have behavior problems is the reason I was told we couldn't adopt a dog! Thanks for breaking my kids heart and making him cry today! This is disgusting ????. I gave a 1star bc. You have to I n oder to write a review. You people should be more upfront about what requirements are asked of everyone who comes here! Again I called ahead of time spoke to Andrea who never mentioned this. Does not say anything about that on your website!I would never recommend this place to no one who loves dog's. We drove 2hrs to get here and to be told only 16yrs. Olds kids can adopt dogs .

For anyone out there that ever thought of adopting an older pet, don't hesitate one more minute. We are the happy family of 4 wonderful dogs. Our first experience with Little Shelter was in June of 2020 when we adopted our little Morty, a 15 year-old teacup poodle who was blind and had no teeth. He was a little guy with a BIG heart and a BIG personality! Morty came everywhere with us, traveling in style in his little pink stroller, with a bowl full of baby Goldfish as a snack! The day we adopted Morty we brought our 3 other pups to meet him at Little Shelter, and he fit right into our little pack. From that day forward, Morty became the most wonderful addition to our family of humans and puppies! Unfortunately our little Morty passed away in April of 2021. We felt some things we had acquired for Morty could be helpful to Little Shelter and the puppies there waiting for a home. We decided to bring some donations to Little Shelter, but prior to going that day, we had come across the picture of another little guy looking for a home on the Little Shelter website. When dropping off our donations, we inquired about this little guy, who went by Oscar at Little Shelter. In the blink of an eye, Oscar became a member of our family, and now goes by Charlie! Little Shelter had told us that Oscar was being passed over again and again for a home, and that he was blind and hard of hearing. Upon bringing him home, we discovered he also had no teeth! A sign from our Little Morty that Oscar was meant to be ours. Both Morty and Charlie have brought so much happiness and love to our family of 6 humans and 4 dogs. Going forward, our family will return to Little Shelter to bring home other furry senior citizens. They are the most wonderful addition to a family, with so much love to give, and in need of so much love and kindness themselves. What's better than bringing a senior pet into your home and making him/her feel comfortable, happy and loved for the rest of his/her life? For our family, we feel there is nothing better. For anyone out there thinking about adopting a pet, please don't overlook senior pets, and please don't be scared off by their age. They are all young at heart and need a family to love and care for them.

Very disappointed in this shelter. I was discriminated because I have mental illness and needed emotional support dog. Didn’t need to be trained to do anything special. I am home 24 hours a day 7 days a week and wanted a special companion to spend my time with and to help with my depression and anxiety. I came to this shelter because I had adopted when I was younger from here as well as other family members adopting. We have donated food and blankets and towels tons of times. So much for them wanting their dogs to be placed in loving home. They wouldn’t even let us walk through because they weren’t going to let me adopt so they look at it as pointless. will be sure to tell all my family and friends not to adopt from them. I will also be sure to bring my donations elsewhere

Went to visit to adopt a younger cat. The volunteer working the counter was very nice and asked us to fill out an adoption form. Some of the questions on the form seemed a bit odd and invasive, such as asking if it would be ok for a representative from the adoption center coming for a home visit of the animal after the adoption. I got the feeling that maybe these people took pet adoption a bit too seriously. After filling out the form we were taken to the adult cat room of the cattery, even though we had told them we were interested in a cat about 6 months old. The adult room was absolutely disgusting. The room was overfilled with adult cats that they had not been able to place in homes, litter boxes overflowing and we couldn't even breathe the odor was so over whelming. The very pleasant volunteer seemed nose deaf to the odor but we could not function. She did finally mention that there was another room that had some younger cats that had a screened in patio. Once we were in that room we were able to breathe and found a very nice friendly cat that was 7 months old. We spent some time hanging out with him and decided we would like to adopt him. We were told that our adoption form would be reviewed and they would get back to us after our references were contacted. The next day we were called by one of their "adoption counselors" who began questioning me on the visitation of my children (divorced) and the stray cat we have tamed who now lives with us indoor/outdoor. Counselor explained that there may be an issue with the indoor/outdoor cat not having vet records, and my kids would have to come in to make sure they have a bond with the cat. We reluctantly agreed to bring my children in for a bonding session with the cat in a few days. That never happened because the next day we were called and told that our adoption application is being denied because they are afraid our adoption might get outside along with our indoor/outdoor. We went to Petco and found 2 5 month old sister kittens that were very friendly and well cared for who are now living with us and happily coexisting with the indoor/outdoor. I hope the cat we wanted from Little Shelter does not have to live out its days in that gross over-populated adult cat room!

I adopted Stella (formally named Roxie) from Little Shelter 2 years ago. She is the perfect little angel and escape artist. She remains to be 100% healthy and I am delighted with the staff and the facility. Stella lives with her 17 year old pug step-brother( BOO) and the 2 are wonderfully delicious fur children. When it is Boo's time, I certainly will return to Little Shelter . I often visit and attend events just to feel the love . She is depicted here as a cheerleader for Halloween. I uploaded a photo but it does not show on the review

This shelter is absolutely wonderful! they put so much thought and time into ensuring the animals have a safe home to come to and it truly warms my price. I will be suggesting this shelter to all my friends who are looking to adopt a dog. Much more personal and intimate then town shelters which was such a nice change. Grateful i ended up here because now I have my new fur-bestfriend!!!!!

I had the most wonderful experience at The Little Shelter. We adopted 1 1/2 year old Tammy who was terrified to be in our home at first but now is the princess of the house. The Little Shelter went above an beyond to make sure that Tammy was well taken care of. I appreciate all that they do to take care of the animals in the shelter and all that they do to make sure that they are going to good homes.

We adopted a senior dog at Little Shelter and had the most amazing experience. Mike was patient during the dog interactions, and John was so kind with us. We have nothing but positive things to say about Little Shelter - this shelter is truly a sanctuary and the staff does an amazing job with potential adopters!! We are so thrilled to have welcomed little Louis to our family! Thank you Little Shelter!

So I really was thinking of adopting from this place because, looking at the reviews and hoping they aren't paid reviews, they seem pretty nice. When I went inside all was good. However I didn't like the staff at that moment. They were talking to me in a way I felt was suggesting something rude towards me. By the way everything looked well organized and stuff, it looked nice, but the problem here is the staff. I really don't know the process of placing volunteers here, but before they do that I recommend they need some sort of interview with a higher up, and (dont think this happens but..) not just say "OK you're in" and then they are really mean. So if you go here just watch out for the staff. But overall a neat place.
