Heartland Animal Shelter Wheeling, Illinois

When I first moved out on my own I looked at Heartland for a cat. While that fell through due to my living situation I always thought of them due to my friendly, kind, and professional experience with them. My now husband and I went back to Heartland a few years later to adopt a dog and had just as positive of an experience with them the second time around. It's been nearly 2 years now since we adopted our rott mix Riley from Heartland and she's been the perfect fit. We had gone in to meet another dog but he was unavailable by the time we could get out there as we did not live nearby. The young woman helping us that day asked if we'd be interested in seeing two other dogs with similar dispositions to the one we came for and it clicked with Riley. We can't bring in anymore fur babies at this time but we have always planned on going back when we are able to look for another pup that needs a home! Thank you Heartland for bringing our furbaby to us!

I volunteered before the pandemic happened while the they were located in Northbrook and I only could work with in the cat room; I'm not really a cat person, however, the people there were very friendly and helpful. It was an enjoyable experience. I'm looking forward to volunteering at the new location in Palatine and working with the dogs!

Great place to rescue an animal from!

I have adopted 4 cats from Heartland, with 2 having crossed the Rainbow Bridge recently. But Heartland is a blessing to animals and they always make sure that adopters are a good fit.

Great facility, staff was very polite and adoption was fast.

Kitten adoption process was smooth and easy! Facility was quaint but clean and tidy. Adopt, don’t shop!

I am forever grateful to Heartland Animal Shelter! Not only did they save my dogs life by helping me . They also helped an elderly military woman who was sick in the hospital with her dog ! Wonderful , caring , people !

It was awesome from beginning to end. They r great people who really care about there animals going to good homes.

Highly recommended shelter. They were friendly and the adoption process was easy and stress free. They talked to me over the phone before we came in so they could suggest a cat that would fit into our household. And did they ever. Our boy Dash had no fear of our dogs and even plays with them. He's outgoing, fearless and a bit of a lunatic who keeps us laughing every day. He wants to be with us constantly and always wants to know what we're doing. He even tries to help us do things, which usually isn't much help but is sweet and amusing. He was the perfect cat for our home. If things hadn't worked out they told us we could bring him back, no questions asked. We wouldn't part with Dash for anything but it's very nice to know the animals adopted there can easily return it they don't work out for some reason. That will prevent them from being dumped at a kill shelter or abandoned. All in all, a great experience with a staff that really cares about the animals there and wants to find them a truly forever home. We can't thank them enough for bringing this sweet, crazy cat into our lives.

Dr priesser n Katie were awesome with my dog.even my dog rested on Katie's shoulder.She was that comfortable and so was i..Both were very good with explaining things to me.My dog had a checkup,ears cleaned n nail trim. Glad I switched vet drs

Adopted my Great Pyrenees here. He was rescued from a kill shelter and got loving care here. Wonderful people.

Great place to get a pet. They take very good care of the dogs and cats they have and are very knowledgeable. Best place to get a sheltered animal.

We have adopted countless furbabies from Heartland over the years. They are so compassionate in their mission of finding furever homes for the furbabies.

We have been taking our babies there for 16 years! We adopted them next door at Heartland Animal Rescue in 2005.The staff is CARING,SKILLED,AND PROFESSIONAL!

Just adopted my sweet girl during the clear the shelter event. The staff is so kind and compassionate.

We adopted our two lovely dogs from here. Great place, but they can get very busy at times which is very good for the animals. We worked with Tom both times and he was wonderful. We also donated crates our pooches have outgrown. Anyway, they can always use more volunteers and foster homes. We wouldnt adopt from any other shelter.

Adopted a bonded pair from here, great experience. Was a medical concern once we got pet home, they were very receptive to addressing immediately. Me sure we had everything we needed as we left. Couldn't be happier.

Marshmallow thinks it is wonderful after he stops complaining about being there, at the vet. I love the shelter though. I got my Lulu there in 2004. ????

I have a ton of respect for Heartland. It is clean and well maintained, the animals are well fed and taken care of as if they were the personal pets of everyone there. The staff is patient as well as knowledgeable regarding their charges as well as providing adopters a great deal of information on the 'care and feeding' of their new family member. They try their best to stay in touch with each adopting family thru the first year and are always available to answer questions. Working in partnership with Priser, the animals receive excellent medical care pre adoption (and post adoption if you don't already have your own vet). We adopted 3 pets from Heartland over an 18 month span, Nov 2014 and Mar 2016 (an 8 mo old kitten, a 2 year old lg breed dog and a 3 yr old cat). They are amazing animals...can't imagine living without any of them. I applauded Heartland's "empty the shelter" concept...they have done a wonderful job of placing animals during g this pandemic and have access to a network of Fosters. My only regret is that our age and current health statuses preclude our volunteering to be Fosters ourselves. Anyone out there who has an extra petbed might consider applying to foster an animal. Years ago I looked here to adopt a kitten. The staff were very friendly and very helpful. I ended up having to back out of the adoption for family reasons. This year (this month!) My fiance and I went back to look at dogs! We went to look at a specific dog but he had an adoption pending at that point. We agreed to look at dogs with similar temperaments. The staff and volunteers were all very friendly and happy to help us. We met a couple dogs and ended up setting up a meet with one for our current dog. The staff was all very warm and kind through the whole process!

They will not reply if you are interested in adopting. Wow! In addition to not replying, they post lies about replying. I did not receive a call nor did I call anyone. I only completed an application, which I am revoking. Strange interaction.

Amazing staff! If you are looking for a forever furbaby I totally recommend this organization!
