I rarely write reviews but our most recent experience inspired me to do so! review of this We adopted our first ever kitty (named Lorelei) from a shelter in North Haven about 12 years ago. Soon after adoption, we took her to the nearest Vet clinic. It wasn’t the greatest experience. In part because they tried to sell all kinds of tests, scans etc. It felt as though we were renting a car where the rental agency tries to scare you into buying all sorts of additional coverages. Thereafter, we moved to another clinic in Cheshire area for a couple years. While it was a good experience, somehow it felt short of our expectations. We then landed at Mt Pleasant Hospital for animals in Newtown. It has been a wonderful experience from the very beginning. More on that in a moment. In between, I moved to Sweden. It was an elaborate process of tests, vaccinations and documentation etc to be completed before we Lorelei aka Google could be on her way to her maiden air travel and that too to Sweden. Dr Vali walked us through each step and was instrumental in ensuring that we had everything we needed! He even sent us to another clinic to avoid delays because their clinic was very busy and wouldn’t be able to run a test in time! Can’t thank him enough for that. Three years later (2017) we returned to the US but this time to the west coast in Seattle. During all this time every now and then Dr Vali would enquire about Lorelei’s welfare! That’s how much he cares about his patients! About six months back, we moved back to Connecticut. Among all the uncertainties the only thing we were certain about was that Lorelei would once again get excellent care! We promptly got her back into Dr Vali’s care. Back in Seattle, Lorelei was being evaluated every six months under a a “wellness plan” for which we were paying on monthly basis. When I suggested similar schedule to Dr Vali, his response was- “sure you can come in and we can have a beer”! In other words, it wasn’t needed! He could have said yes but he didn’t and that tells me that this hospital isn’t out there to take our money!! During the time we have been away, the hospital has been beautifully renovated with expanded space in the check-in / waiting area. About two weeks ago (Dec 10th), Lorelei developed acute abdominal discomfort. Dr Vali recommended that we take her to the nearest emergency hospital (his staff helped us locate one) and follow up with him the next day. During this process, we discovered that our kitty has developed either acute or chronic kidney failure. Dr Vali took her in the very next day and came up with a short and long-term treatment plan. He explained everything to us in detail so that we understood what all was to be done and could make an informed decision! Lorelei had an overnight stay at the hospital. Her renal function has significantly improved since! Of note, the care and compassion with which the animal technician Claire handled Lorelei was exceptional! Same caring attitude was shown by Emily at the check out counter. And, Angie who helped us with scheduling, coordinating and with communication before, during and after Lorelei’s stay at the hospital has been truly exceptional too! Our collective experience tells me that the entire staff at Mt Pleasant hospital is genuinely caring and compassionate which is what one would want for one’s furry family members and is definitely a true sign of a great hospital!! In addition, the facility is always very clean which is important to me! We strongly recommend Mt Pleasant Hospital for animals in Newtown!

I am very disappointed with this vet. Not only was it impossible to get a hold of someone, I was told by a receptionist that they double book appointments. Get ready to wait and have people be rude while you do. I finally saw Dr. Bakewell. After the first appointment she called late at night and left a message which sounded serious about my pet, but then it was impossible to get a hold of her for follow-up. She never returns phone calls, and if she does you better hope that you are available to answer otherwise it could be weeks before you talk to her again. She was very helpful and caring at first, but then I spent hundreds of dollars multiple times to have tests and medication with no resolution or communication. Ultimately, she never addressed my pet's basic needs, she would not answer questions during the appointment, and was impossible to contact after for follow-up and unanswered questions. Time for a different vet.

Brought my 76 lb. pit bull mix for a nail trim. He is sweet but very excitable and jumpy. Clare and her two trainees were nonplussed by his behavior as were the front desk staff. . They were professional but gentle and fast. I couldn't have asked for better.

The staff at Mount Pleasant are incredibly caring and attentive to the needs of their clients. They are knowledgeable and work diligently to care for the animals that are their patients. I know that my golden retriever, George is getting the best possible care there.

Mt Pleasant Hospital has been my go to with all my English Bulldogs. Dr.Vali has been compassionate and caring to the point of having his staff call to check on my animals. I have been a client of MT Pleasant hospital for over 15 years. I have rescued English bulldogs and have had nothing but the best care and compassion , honesty. My English bull had an episode over the summer , Dr Vali brought her in no questions asked and she is still healthy and happy today. I can’t thank him and his staff for all the love and support shown to my animals through the years . If I could rate 10 stars I would !

Our last (and final) visit was the worst experience we have had. I’m not sure what changed internally but it’s showing through. The vet me basically pulled out dog out of the car, didn’t say hello and greet us and on top of that the required shots for dogs to be able to go into daycare were missed, causing us to have to schedule another vet appt (with someone else) causing more stress and losing time for my wife and I. It’s unfortunate that the quality of service has dropped the way it has.

Brought my dog in for a nail cut, walked out with her paralyzed in her hind legs. HORRIBLE place and HORRIBLE people. Dr. Vali is incompetent and his wife shows no sympathy. She blamed us for her life ending mistake. We now have to put our dog down. Absolutely devastated. DO NOT GO HERE

I always try to give the benefit of the doubt but eventually after repetitive unreliable actions, it was time to take my dog else where. I get that things happen here and there but every time? Phone lines are either down or busy more frequent than not. I respect calling and waiting in the car for COVID purposes, but that visit then turns into two hours of waiting in your car -- including the part where they take your card to pay for the services but then not return for 15 more minutes after you call again to see where your card is. Today I called first thing in the morning and was already asked to be placed on hold -- it was not an emergency so I complied. After being on hold for about 5 minutes, the phone rerouted to a voicemail where I then proceeded to leave a message to be called back. I did not receive a call back so around 3pm I called and was again asked to hold, then at which I explained the scenario from this morning, however, I was still asked to be placed on hold. After holding for another 5 minutes, the phone then rerouted again to the main menu. At that point I connected with someone and simply asked to have my dog's records sent to me and this request was met promptly. The whole encounter, and many prior, was just odd. I called a different vet and within minutes I had been helped significantly more than I had ever been at Mt. Pleasant. I hope they can make the adjustments they need in order to service the animals better than this.

I've dealt with Dr Bakewell, Dr Vali and Dr Mangold. They've all been extremely professional, kind, understanding, caring and compassionate. They're there for the easy and difficult decisions and their staff are wonderful.

I have a highly anxious rescue dog who always has a difficult experience at the vet. No longer the case with Mt. Pleasant, Dr. Bakewell and her team! They went above and beyond to ensure a great experience for myself and my dog and to minimize his stress. Dr. Bakewell also took the time to explain everything and to let my dog settle in - and he does need a lot of time. They are without a doubt the most professional and most empathetic vet office we've ever visited. I am very grateful!

Mary, Dr. Bakewell and Dr. Vali treated our dog Zoey from birth, until she passed, taking amazing care of her along the way! They are attentive, caring and treated her like one of their own pets. The best care a pet owner could ask for.

Absolutely wonderful from start to finish. Ours was a ferret semi emergency and her regular vet was not in, so we were new and Mica just wasn’t feeling well. The tech who came to my car to get her was very kind and understanding of the anxiety of handing my best friend over to strangers. We did not wait at all for the vet to see her and call me. The vet was also wonderful! This is my new emergency vet 100%!!! I highly recommend.

I am not a client of Mt. Pleasant, however, my regular vet was recently closed when I needed a progesterone test for my dog. Mt. Pleasant helped me on a very busy Saturday and provided excellent service! I appreciate their help more than words can express! Thank you!

My dog came back sick twice after boarding at their premises. My older dog has arthritis and has never been diagnosed by them (but diagnosed by two other vet elsewhere). Although we have informed them many times that my dog’s legs are shaking and he has difficult in going up stairs they never prescribed any medicine or made the proper diagnosis. He is also said to be overweight but the vet never prescribed a diet for him, just sent a report card with that information - which I read when I came home and never had the chance to talk to the vet. Last - the vet said he may have eye cancer - in a 30 second phone call as they are not allowed to see humans because of COVID - and said nothing else but referred me to another clinic.

I always love going here! My family has been using Mt. Pleasant for almost 20 years and even though I now live almost 35 mins away, I still travel so that we can see you all and receive the best quality care I know I can expect. Thank you for all you do.

Great doctors and excellent staff here! I can not say enough good things about them. Always caring and responsive, even on their busiest days. Great with all animals but especially wonderful with large breed dogs such as Great Danes. They even make follow up calls to make certain their patients are responding well to medicines and procedures!
