On 04-22-2021 We went there to get a kitten and things were great for 4 weeks. On the 5th week instead of solid coming out a liquid that stunk and NO URINE!!!instead we rushed her to the hospital ( memorial day weekend), and hell broke loose. She was Anemic and extremely ill. I Dont blame shelter hope, They only know what there told. Coming home she wasntvthe same, Agression and Very Moody. The biting the scratching you name it. We brought back the cat. A one time thing. God bless Oreo.????

Torn how to rate them. They do so much good by rescuing, but I was so turned off my the lady who runs it. Rochelle or Raquel. She was rude to visitor and volunteers both.

Uneven reception by volunteer staff. Did not feel welcomed Both dogs we were interested had undergone medical treatment the day before our appointment. One was still knocked out from anesthetic. Adoption fee is an exorbitant $450. I would strongly recommend LA and Ventura Co. animal shelters over this resource.

I have never been so happy with a pet shop/ rescue. We adopted a gorgeous 2 month old kitten from them. We named her Oreo. Shelter Hope is so clean, it didn't even smell like a petshop. Raquel helped get acquainted with the cute little kitten. We have never been this happy in years. Oreo has adapted quite well and very quickly. Only after a few days, she knows our routine, and follows us around. She knows when it's bedtime and sleeps next to my hubby all night. Thanks to all of you at Shelter Hope for bringing this beautiful little girl into our lives. Don't be afraid to adopt a pet from them. You will not regret it. I'm so happy I could cry with joy.????.

The staff needs to do a better job of evaluating the pets. Their willingness to allow pets that are not ready for adoption can very well lead to problem placements

I adopted my Lily 2 weeks after losing my husband of 34 years in 2016.. she is an amazing dog.. we just lost her older sister “Flower” and hope someday to find another rescue here. I feel sad to hear about the Rescuers who adopted a sick puppy ????

Great place to meet your next pup. Easy access and online viewing of various pups who need good homes. Great support to adopters.

Buyer beware. This wasn’t an adoption this was an audition and no one told me that. I was so excited to be rescuing a dog for our family. The people I spoke with over email and the phone were helpful, kind and as excited as I was. But when we drove over 30 miles to the shelter - prepared to pay $500 to save a dog - my family walked into the store and was immediately shut down. The woman helping us seemed annoyed we were there at all (even though we had an appointment). She was annoyed my children were excited about the puppies. She was hovering and snapping at us to close the doors faster. She kept calling all the dogs “her dogs”. She tried to push us toward a dog we did not come to see nor want. We tried to be polite and asked for permission before doing anything but she couldn’t be bothered. Ultimately when we asked if we could adopt one of the puppies she flat out told us no. That my son who was excited needed more “exposure” to puppies. Because that’s a totally easy thing to do during a global pandemic. ???? If we’re not supposed to buy dogs. And all these rescue places swoop up the dogs in the shelters before families can see them. But then the rescue places won’t let you adopt dogs. Then how the hell do you get a dog for your family? I’ll never go back here. Such a disappointment

The staff was very friendly and it was apparent the health and well being of the pets was their primary concern. We had to euthanize two dogs this year due to age & health issues. The last six months was pretty rough. We were able to adopt a chihuahua “lap dog” from Shelter Hope which immediately healed my wife’s heart. Thank you to all the shelters and rescues for what they do.

I wasn't going to write a review, but after reading posted reviews I feel I need to. I understand that Shelter Hope is trying to do a good thing by finding homes for pets and I applaud them for that. However, I seriously question their methods and practices for doing so. I recently adopted a puppy from Shelter Hope. He was perfect for the first day, but it turns out he had giardia. He then became sick with vomiting and diarrhea and was diagnosed with potentially deadly and HIGHLY CONTAGIOUS parvo. He survived the parvo and now has been diagnosed with demodex mange. He is getting great medical care and he will come through this, but it's been a tough life for him so far. Unfortunately, Shelter Hope often brings in puppies from the Bakersfield area, which is endemic for parvo and distemper. If they insist on bringing dogs in from outside Ventura county, they should have protocols in place to be sure they are parvo and distemper free before adopting them out. It is shameful that they don't. We aren't endemic for parvo in our county and if a case is found, the dog is most likely from another county, like Kern county and the city of Bakersfield in particular. Just be sure where the puppy came from before you adopt from them and ask if it's been tested for parvo and ask for proof of a negative test result. I see from other reviews that my puppy isn't the only parvo puppy Shelter Hope has adopted out. Be careful!

This is an unfortunate place calling themselves a rescue. My wife and I went in to adopt 2 dogs we found there. We spent over an hour in the pen with the dogs and they really warmed up to us. We were saving the world from squeakers! For some reason, after agreeing to pay the $900 to adopt them both, a quick conversation the girl interviewing us had with another girl there, they decided we were not 'a good fit'. My wife is a school psychologist who is currently managing our rental properties from home and I work as a software engineer writing code for the mortgage bond market for a leading mortgage aggregator. My wife and I have loved animals our whole lives and have a lot of love to share. I still don't understand who is a good fit if we weren't. I'm glad we didn't give them so much money since they clearly don't have the animal's best interest in mind. I really hope I'm wrong thinking they just wanted to keep the cute ones we wanted to adopt in the shop to attract other suckers. It was very disappointing since we've always taken rescues. I guess we have room to find 2 others, but I really hope the 2 we went in for get a great home.

We came to look on a puppy and the lady that was in charge was so rude, she was annoyed by us and didn’t answer any questions about the dog, complete ignore. I have no words. Not a good experience although the volunteers were all nice . Well as you can tell we did not get the puppy .

I write this review with mixed emotions. This isn't for a service or product but for the rescue where we recently adopted our puppy. He was 8-weeks old when we adopted him, and he only had the first round of puppy shots. Within a week, he would be afflicted with the deadly Parvovirus. We went to two different vets as he suddenly started to experience very bad diarrhea and vomiting. How could this happen? We were so careful and kept him indoors as advised. The emergency vet that hospitalized him said that he was infected prior to our adopting him. We were very thankful that the vet tested him for the Parvovirus, so that the proper treatment could be administered, as a delay of a day would have proven fatal for him. Our puppy has had a hard life. We were told that he was rescued from a Bakersfield shelter, and that he and his littermates had experienced Giardia. That would explain why he was skin and bones. Our puppy spent 3 days at the hospital, and was very fortunate to beat the Parvovirus. The treatment was not cheap, and we weren't expecting such a large cost (close to $2,500 and that doesn't even count the $550 adoption fee) within a week of adopting him. We asked Shelter Hope in Thousand Oaks for financial assistance, but the owner wasn't available at that time. In the meantime, we had to take our puppy back to the vet, since we saw worms in his stool. The vet said that it takes time for the eggs to mature into worms; so once again according to the vet this was something that occurred prior to our adopting our puppy. The owner finally got back to us and offered $150, which doesn't even cover the cost of a de-worming treatment that our puppy recently received. While we certainly wanted to adopt from a shelter or rescue, we had no idea that we would be hit so hard financially by things that were out of our control prior to adoption and hoped that the owner would be sympathetic. However, in light of what has happened, we would not recommend adopting from this rescue, unless you're willing to spend $3,000 and can take a lot of heartbreak, disappointment, and stress in less than a month. Please go elsewhere if you value your sanity and peace of mind.
