I adopted my dog Fenrir (bear-dog) from here. He is wonderful and loving and he immediately stuck to our other dog like glue. The adoption counselors were so nice and helpful in the dog Introductions and such. However when I took Fenrir to his first vet appointment the doctor told me that he has a genetic deformity of his eyelids. It makes them roll inward and scratches his eyelids. Ever since I've been trying to raise money to pay for his surgery. I noticed his eyes looked weird when I got him but I thought it was just what his bread looked like. So it made me wonder why the humane society didn't do anything about it. It bothers him everyday and they just passed that expense onto the new owners. Even though they do medical procedures for other dogs.

My first time visiting was amazing, I got the dog I went for(a pit bull that they weren’t 100% sure was good with kids and obviously turned out great). Fast forward two years, we went with a friend for him to get a husky that he had previously looked at and talked with them, looked at the trainers notes and everything where it said nothing negative about him with kids and as soon as they saw us all together(with kids) they immediately told him no, were incredibly rude and wouldn’t listen when we said we were leaving with the kids in the morning and the dog will actually never even be around the kids at all. They kept being rude, hit disrespectful at the end and then they followed us out and tried to take a picture of our license plate(which is not legal). An absolutely terrible experience and we believe that they just didn’t want to deal with the process of bringing the dog out for the interaction and cleaning up after the interaction. Side note:they were immediately rude as we walked in. If you want respect do not go to them, go alone, tell them boing about your life and try to get the dogs away from those people.

Went to get a companion dog for my father in law. The process took about 30 minutes. There was ample parking, the staff was very friendly and very knowledgeable. A much better experience than I had expected. My father in law now has a new friend to replace his friend of 18 years who recently passed away. ,

I got my dog Blaze from this location. Great prices and a great facility with very friendly staff. They do behavioral observations so that you know exactly what you're getting when you ask about a dog.

Please be very careful when adopting puppies from the humane society. I adopted from SD humane society Escondido campus. It was disclosed that he had been exposed to a dog with distemper, but was cleared and received a negative test. 3 weeks later and $8000+ of vet bills later, my puppy died after battling a tick borne disease (Anaplasmosis) kennel cough, k9 flu, and was ultimately diagnosed with distemper too and that's what seemed to kill him. He spent his entire time with me quarantined and never was around other dogs after leaving the shelter. I notified the humane society mainly to warn them that other dogs could have been exposed (another puppy got adopted thr same day I adopted my puppy). I never got through to a human, I left a message and they just sent me a refund for my adoption fee _ no one ever reached out to talk to me. I also sent an email, still nothing and it's been 2 weeks now. On top of all of this I am now battling the insurance company to pay for vet bills and they may not approve my claim since he was exposed to distemper st the shelter (despite receiving a negative test). I am heartbroken. My puppy meant everything to me and I loved him dearly. Instead of starting a life with my dog, I am dealing with all of this with no help from SD Humane Society. I understand that humane societies are often underfunded and under staffed, and I empathize. but I adopted from this shelter because I wanted to support them.. Now I am left completely heartbroken, without a puppy, and without even a phone call or email or follow up. I want to add: the employees on the floor that day when I adopted were amazing. They were kind and nice despite a very busy, crazy day. I am more frustrated with the larger systems of SD humane society for not doing more thorough vet work and for the lack of response to me after such a tragic incident.

Adopted a senior bull terrier from this wonderful shelter. Very efficient adoption process, very friendly & helpful staff/volunteers, they ensure each animal's medical needs are taken care of, adoption fees are next to nothing compared to how much they invest in each animals needs. And they provide additional support options for your newly adopted pet such as 1 free training session and 1 free vet visit (VCA vets). Very happy with my experience at the facility and with my new buddy❤

My Belgian Malinois got out do to the recent thunderstorm. Thankfully was found and recovered by The San Diego Humane Society. Didn’t have him vaccinated or registered I honestly thought it was going to be a pain to get him back, luckily it was NOT. The ENTIRE staff was extremely helpful and super cooperative. Starting with the security up front to the 2 front desk receptionist guys and also the lady’s helping in the back checking in and out with Ollie. Super thankful! Excellent Service!

Called to get help for at risk dog. Person on duty didn't want to come because she was on her way home even though she had an hour left on her shift. The dog died trapped between 2 walls. I will not donate or adopt ever again.

I've been trying to adopt a dog. Everytime I do the online steps I never get a phone interview. By the time I know it someone else is already approved? But there's never any appointments available. I wish they were open normally instead of doing the process online

Try and adopt a dog here if you want your heart broken. Already left a review but they deleted it, most likely because they don't want people to know about this BS. I got approved for my dream dog but could not pick him up the same day because I live in San Diego and was working when they approved me. I called and left a voicemail stating that I was working but could be there first thing in the morning to adopt the dog. I call the next day after no response and they tell me that they approved someone else because I could not pick him up the same day. Like hello people have to work and can't just drop what they are doing to pick the dog up the same day. Maybe if they were open later people who work 9-5 could adopt a dog easier because with there same day pick up policy it makes it pretty much impossible. Also why is it ok for the people they adopted my dog to, to pick him up the next day but not me? Because the time of day?! Seems to me like they are picking and choosing which is not fair.
