They killed a two year old dog and didn't even give people a chance to foster or adopt him because he was a "liability". This place sucks.

Great Experience!!! We had a large Bunny who died, so we needed to dispose of the body. The folks at Berkeley Animal Control were very nice, expressed their Sympathy & took the Rabbit, in a Black Plastic Bag, in a Box, no questions asked!!! (If we'd wanted cremation, they explained that service was available for a fee... We didn't need anything fancy, we just didn't want to put our sweet little Bunny out with the Trash!!!) Thx Berkeley Animal Control!!! ♡♡♡♡

Helpful and considerate staff; animals are well cared for; accommodations clean. Be careful however, I almost went home with additional animals-they can sense one's vulnerabilities and weaknesses and will entice you to take a couple of rabbits or three!

Wonderful place with very caring staff and volunteers. The animals are well cared for and the folks there go out of their way to find them new homes. The shelter is bright, spotless and has a full range of vet services.

Help me out with a stray female on behalf of Fix Our Ferals. Staff were knowledgeable and caring professionals. Thank you so much.

Have been friendly and helpful everytime I've had to drop off injured wildlife there.

Probably the most compassionate municipal animal shelter around. Always ready to help out with great staff and awesome volunteers!

This place treated my elderly cat with such tender care. That special touch means the world to me. Thank you from the bottom of my heart!

I have been in and out of here several times while it was open to the public, and I couldn’t really say any of my experiences were positive. They make you feel rushed and incredibly judged for your questions, and seem to be doing everything in their power to condescend volunteers and minimize their efforts. As much as I wanted to find my furever pet here, I think I’ll have much better luck elsewhere.

They are awesome! Jane is the bomb. She was able to get me there when Google Maps FAILED! (Another story, another scorez) The Ferals I took in have bounced back rather quickly. Eating and playing with wobbly legs, like a drunk Otis* trying to dance. They are eating and drinking healthy. Elora, the female had hiccups. This group does the work, non profit. I donated to their efforts to flatten the curve. Hard to do with all that's going on. I am so GREATFUL for their efforts. A special shout out to Jane!????

When I first spoke to the manager of Berkeley Animal Care Services (Amelia Funghi) about the facility, she immediately corrected me and referred to it as a pound. I’m not normally one to judge based solely on first impression, but in this case I think it would have been right. In my time as a college student, I was lucky enough to volunteer and work with the staff of the Santa Barbara Humane Society, and man is the difference in culture astounding. This is one difference which can be felt the minute you walk in the door, and I think in this case the successes and failures of each can be attributed to their leadership; one feels like an inclusive place of service, and the other feels like the cold of an office building. If you’re looking for a facility and a staff who value their animals and respect them on the basest level, unfortunately I wouldn’t be able to recommend this one :( As the manager of the facility herself stated, Berkeley Animal Care Services is a pound not a shelter. And to people who care about the difference, I think that speaks volumes to the standards held by each organization, and the values which they uphold.

I'm not one to get easily upset or offended, but wow! The front desk staff is in desperate need of basic etiquette training. I could've never expected the unpleasant and condescending attitude we received from Ms. Wong ( I think her name was?) From the second we walked in the door she was completely unprofessional and straight up rude! ????????

We adopted a new pup - Rose - here about a month ago. The entire process was wonderful. Staff and volunteers are professional, kind and helpful. Rose is a perfect addition to our family and clearly received good care while she was here.

Sad experience here... I was happy to get a dog but it did not go well. Aggressive to us. I went to return the dog 5 days after and I tried to explain to the staff what happened but they were so rude to me and my husband; especially the receptionist with long black hair (I do not remember her name). When I left my heart was broken because I really like the dog but definitely I won't come back to this place to look for adoption. The receptionist has no manners to treat people. I hope she is nicer with pets!

The animals are housed in a clean environment with information attached to each kennel for easy access. Animal carers are very helpful and friendly. My only complaint are the condescending and rude receptionists. My advise is to direct any questions you have to the carers and avoid talking to the receptionists as much as you can so as to not ruin your day.

***Update 2019*** Taggy adopted her human in 2011 and she is doing extraordinarily well. Taggy loves midnight cuddles, pate tuna, and sleeps nearly 19 hours out of the day. Thank you, Berkeley Animal Care Services for giving me the greatest gift of all - companionship. Post from 2013: Taggy, aka, Penelope is very happy!

I adopted a kitten three years ago and a three legged little full grown cat after that. Those adoptions weren't easy because it means years of care so I went in many many times before finally adopting and was able to get to know the staff who are wonderful. One day, I brought in a dog that I found on the streets with spray paint on it and they took him in quickly.

On Wednesday I'm picking up the third dog we have adopted from this shelter over the past 25 years. From the old shelter we all remember, to the beautiful facility Berkeley boasts now... The one thing that has never changed has been the commitment of the amazing staff and volunteers who care so much about the beautiful animals in their care, and about every visitor who come to visit. They share in one of the most important experiences a family can have. Another thing that has never changed is the number of dogs and cats who need a loving home... Go now, and share our experience.... And enjoy the abundant love of a furry friend.
